Yeah this is the closest an atheist can realistically get - it's why Richard Dawkins in his book has a whole section called 'Why God Almost Certainly Does Not Exist', and not 'Why God Does Not Exist'. It is a question of evidence, and while no, we cannot say "God DOES NOT exist", we certainly can say "the probability of God existing is tiny, based on the available evidence".

It may be useful reading this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atheism#De ... stinctions

Although ultimately I don't much care how it's all defined - if someone asks I'm an atheist, just like I'm an atheist towards fairies; I do not believe in fairies. I do not know fairies do not exist, but I see no evidence for them and think they are extremely unlikely.

I should not push my beliefs on to anyone else, for I would hate for someone to do the same to me.

I'm sure most would agree with that - although the question is, is UNbelief the same as belief? What doctrines and opinions are part of the "atheism" package? It is simply saying you don't believe in someone else's God.

As long as it doesn't make anyone else unhappy.

EDIT: This was a reply to Martin's post.

if you take atheism to be the firm belief that there is no god or equivelent force then i think the only logical stance is to be agnostic.

i would say there is more evidence for the existence of a god or 'creator' than fairies.

I think this topic is entirely pointless.
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

I want to know what people have been looking for to have determined there is no evidence of God.

I don't James exists, there is no evidence to support it.

I reckon people get too caught up in looking to prove or disprove the existence of God as described by major religions rather than just pondering the difficult questions for themselves. Whilst this may lead some to science, I don't have the brain to comprehend the physics behind the creation of the universe so I just concentrate on the simpler stuff when trying to get to sleep. I guess the most obvious example, and one that relates to Pat Condell-style rants (If God exists and is merciful, why does 'he' let bad things happen?), is why stuff has panned out in the way it has and if it was always meant to - i.e. utter bollocks but bollocks which can be helpful to help you understand your life better.

Does God have a God? And if so, shouldn't we be praying to him?

Yeah...
