Some servers have eight or even sixteen processor cores. On the desktop market, single oct-core processors aren't available, but you can get the same effect by having two quad-core processors on the same motherboard.
Apple have been going for that approach for quite a while - I think their G5 (or whatever they replaced the G5 with) can theoretically go up to eight cores.

Dual quad-core? What on earth would you be running to need that? Jeez! What spec is The Beast?

You do not ask questions of The Beast; The Beast asks questions of you.

Re: Wanted: Custom Computer Build Jobs
Bearing in mind it's cost me the best part of £1500 to put together, the beast is:
Processor - Intel Core2Quad Q6600 - overclocked to 3.75GHz (runs at 2.4GHz standard)
Memory (RAM) - 4GB Corsair XMS2 Dominator (PC2-8500 @ 1066MHz) - basically the fastest memory possible on the DDR2 spec (DDR3 is out but it's stupidly expensive and not worth it)
Hard Drives - 320GB drive for Windows and Linux + 750GB drive for data (music, documents, movies etc)
Motherboard - ASUS P5Q-Pro (mid-to-high end motherboard, can handle pretty big overclocks)
Graphics Card - Sapphire ATI HD4870 512MB (the second-fastest single-GPU card around, handles everything at high settings on a 22" monitor)
DVD-RWs - 1 x Sony bog-standard DVD-writer, 1 x LG BluRay/DVD-RW combo drive
Cooling - custom-built watercooling loop incorporating processor, graphics card and motherboard cooling
Case - Coolermaster Cosmos S
And it looks like this:

I can almost hear it growl. Isn't that a crispy tissue next to the keyboard? LOL

And the best part is I'm not paying rent so I really don't care

It's actually pretty quiet, considering there's eight fans in there (six of them on the radiator in the top of the case) - I generally have them all on half-speed.

Re: Wanted: Custom Computer Build Jobs
Bump - edited the first post.
After having a quick look around for components, I can do a "budget" performance system for £850ish, including motherboard and CPU watercooling (graphics watercooling available, but costs extra).
Obviously I can't do a concrete price until someone actually wants it, and what with all this credit-crunch and recession stuff happening, I know money isn't exactly plentiful.

hahaha! the old man response! nice on ian!
I have as much of a clue as you do, but luckily i have my own geek in the form of Stu. i once went to the pub to meet him when he finished work, and on the bar was an issue of of "what PC". i asked who's it was and he just plainly said "who do you think...". and then when i questioned this being maybe a slight bit geeky, he said "no, look at these processors. i'm building my own PC so i need to know whats good, look at this one, its quadcore and has this and that. oh man look at this one, ohh shit thats sexy... this fucking motherboard is so hot... its literally dripping" and then he started wanking. the manager came down just intime to see stuart spurt a fountain of spermatozoa across the bar and into the face of an unwitting 83 year old lady named Ethel. she was neither impressed or excited, infact... she didn't even notice. she politely said "bless-you" and asked for a half of bitter, and then went back to her seat.
I'M SOOO FUCKING BORED!!!
