Technologies!

Postby thrash metal maniac on Mon May 04, 2009 1:45 pm

Okay, I guess most of us are in some way up to date with new gadgets/technologies and whatnot, what do you keep up to date with (if anything)?

Also what have you got (that you actually use), why do you have/need it? And what do you tihnk about it (ie- is it actually any good), is there anything you'd rather have instead?

My inspiration for this thread is my super awesome new phone - Sony Ericsson C905!

It has an 8.1 MP camera... came with an 8Gb M2 card so I have plenty of room for musics!!! I don't really need a better camera than that since I'm only an amatuer, and I don't need all my music with me at any time, I'm never away for weeks or travelling for more than a couple of hours! The interface is amazing and I'm really pleased just after a couple of days!!!

This is my only technology (apart from this piece of shit computer I'm on), and before that I had a Nokia N95 (which broke 3 weeks before Carphone Warehouse called me for my upgrade), and after spending 3 music-and-camera-less weeks using an ancient Nokia 3310, having something that works and this good is just amazing!!!!!

This phone does everything I want, and having some internet on the phone too is also helpful! Google maps/youtube on the move is great! And i can take photos of everything, and have music once more when I travel!!!

I love technologies!!! :)

My phone is utterly terrible, it is about 6 years old and is a Sendo, so was crap even when newly bought. I wouldn't mind a new one, but I don't really care about having the latest gadget if it means forking out hundreds. I just view it as a texting and occasionally calling device, so I don't need anything more.

Similarly my computer is pretty shite, I got it when I started uni and it's still little more than a word processor. I wouldn't mind more RAM though - I don't even know what RAM is, but apparently mine doesn't have enough to run a graphics program called Fireworks, which is a shame.

I can't say I keep up to date but I do do tech in a big way. I have an N95 (which I use for gig photos/vids), a Razr for on holiday when I want something small and an iPhone for sitting on my desk not being used but I do love it.

I recently bough a Canon HD100 camcorder which I am going to attempt to video gigs on, it's HD and the quality is amazing. I got a røde microphone for it to... can't wait to get kicked out of venues with it :)

On the computer side I'm a macboy so I've got a quad core Mac Pro totally 12GHz or POWER! and a MacBook Pro 15" for when I am on the road doing shit.

I've got a Samsung Tocco, which is alright. I hardly ever use the camera nor MP3 player on it, though I use MP3s for ringtones and alarms. I still have a Nokia 3510i, which is unlocked so is useful when going abroad

I have a Samsung S1050 camera, which has 10.1 MP resolution and 5x optical zoom. Many pics I've taken with it are brill! Great for gigs. I'm on my third proper camera now. Started off with a Polaroid, which was pretty shit for it's time. 5MP and no optical zoom. The battery compartment cover broke so the batteries wouldn't stay in without tape. Fortunately I had cover from Argos so I took it back and was able to get a brand new camera of my choice. I chose my current one's predecessor. Barely just a year after I got it, that one stopped working; it would switch on, make a beeping sound and switch off. I could have had it repaired for free but I needed a wanted a camera for when I went to see Sonata Arctica, so I just got what is now my current one.

For an MP3 player I have an iPod Touch 1st gen 16GB, which I got for £170 off eBay nearly new. I've never had any major problems with iPods. On my fourth one now, only because I like to have the latest model when I can afford. Started off with a 40GB 3rd gen, which was shit for battery life, then got a 60 gig iPod photo. Only had a 160GB iPod Classic for 4 months because I found the Touch more appealing, particularly the apps and Internet access.

I'm on my second laptop now. First one was an EI System, which packed in mysteriously by not switching on at all. Now I have a Compaq Presario C542EA. I upgraded the memory from 1GB to 3GB and the difference is noticeable. I have a 500GB external HDD which is very useful for storing media on it, especially when I'm pricking about with the OS I choose to use. Tried running it on Ubuntu with a Windows XP guest OS in Sun's Virtualbox, but it had hardware issues so I reverted back to Vista. I plan on giving 7 a shot when the public candidate is released tomorrow.

I have a Nokia 6220 on contract - before that I had been using a 3310 type model for years. I decided to go on contract because I text all the time like a little girl. Plus it has a camera on it, so I can take pictures of my girlfriend's boobies.

Self-confessed tech nut

Got a Samsung Tocco phone from Orange on my last upgrade a few months ago and really like it - though I barely use the camera or the MP3 player, I do use the 3G data connection over Bluetooth to my MacBook, so I can be online from anywhere. It did take a while to get used to, but the vibration feedback is actually really good, so that negates a lot of the awkwardness of not having "real" buttons to press.

The MacBook is another pride and joy, it's one of the aluminium unibody MacBooks and I absolutely love it. I planned to get a MacBook since June last year, but I decided to wait until the aluminium revisions were released before I got one. Apple did the Keynote speech on the Tuesday and I went into Lakeside on the Saturday and got one. It's the base aluminium model so no backlit keyboard, but it does everything I want it to do. I'll probably be dual-booting it with Linux (Fedora 11 when it's released) but because of power management niggles with Linux and the MacBook hardware I haven't done it yet.

My main rig (aka Galileo or simply "The Beast") is an self-built behemoth, watercooled and overclocked. It's recently been overhauled slightly to change the colours of the internals and make it a bit neater and it's still not completely finished but it should be back within the week. Specs are an Intel Q6600 quad-core processor overclocked from 2.4GHz to 3.8GHz, 4GB RAM (though I considered upping it to 8GB at one point), ATI HD4870 graphics card, 320GB drive for Windows/Linux, 750GB drive for documents, music etc plus a £160 audiophile-grade sound card and two monitors (22" and 17"). If you're into that sort of thing then pics are on my website's gallery.

MP3 player is a Creative Zen 32GB. Been through a bit of a rough life but it's still working and has never really screwed up on me. Headphones are Sennheiser CX-300's (the originals, not the recent Mark II release) - they really do make a difference.

Camera, which is currently in Germany being repaired due to the flash randomly not firing and a water-drop mark on the inner lens, is a Canon Powershot A590IS - really brilliant camera and as close to a DSLR as I want to get, don't really want to be carrying a massive thing around. I've only recently been experimenting with different settings on it (ISO, shutter speed, exposure time) and got some pretty decent photos of my bass, but then I discovered the watermark problem so had to send the bugger off to be repaired.

You're so proud of your Macbook that you've spilt both Guiness and Coke all over it

You did look pretty distraught frantically mopping up Coke from your disassembled Macbook
