I don't give a shit if only the first verse of God Save the Queen is used, the song just shouldn't be used. And the complete tit that wrote it blatantly had very little grasp of politics as Jacobites and Scots were no where near being one and the same. Scots fought in the British Army against the Jacobites at the Battle of Culloden.

I'm a pretty Unionist Scot, but I find it a complete joke that Scots are often expected to sing God Save the Queen. Perhaps if we weren't then we wouldn't have the references to England and King Edward in our own anthem which, incidentally, I also hate.

To answer your question - No, I don't think England should have its own anthem; Britain shouldn't have an anthem and it definitely shouldn't be referred to as a national anthem seeing as Britain (I'm not sure if God Save the Queen is used in Northern Ireland) is not a nation. England can take God Save the Queen. Just as long as I don't have to hear it again.

GOD SAVE OUR... ZZZZZZZZ!

Yeah. Because 'Scots' couldn't just have referred to the rebellious ones, and not the people as a whole, right?

:wall:

For the record, i'm a McKay, not like the rest of the English guys who haven't got a clue about the whole thing.

I agree with you largely, just I think you're taking that line out of context.

Then as a McKay you'll understand that in 1745 it would be somewhat of a misnomer to refer to the whole of the Scottish population as 'Scots' or hint at a unified Scottish nationality that simply didn't exist. Sure, what with the Highland Clearances and the emergence of English as the lingua franca in Scotland, today it's fair to refer to a Pict as a Scot. At the time, not really.

Either the guy that wrote God Save the Queen was an ill-informed ignoramus or he was just a complete tit.

For the record, I'm an Atkinson yet I know fuck all about Lancashire. What do second names really count for?

Atkinson isn't a clan with heritage. I just take an interest in my family history I guess.

I think the guy who wrote it was both. And I really hate the anthem too.

BAH!

If there's anything that irritates me more than God Save the Queen it's people emphasising their Scottish heritage. I hear it's particularly bad in Canada...

Perhaps that's why they say 'eh' (and Americans say 'man') so much.

Oh sod off. It's not like i'm 9th generation English with some scottish ancestors.

So you're interested in your heritage, so are most people. It doesn't qualify your statement that you, unlike 'the rest of the English guys who haven't got a clue about the whole thing', know more about Scottish history because your second name is McKay.

Drifting from the thread subject rather aren't we?

As for an English anthem--Who really cares?

I don't stand for "God save the Queen"- firstly because I don't believe in God and secondly- the Queen can fuck right off.

The notion of "Nationhood" is rather out-dated.
I know the Yanks and Frogs go in for all that patriotic stuff but it's not my cup of tea. I support English/British sport teams but that's about it( I'm comfortable with that).

I seem to remember some tabloid rag running a poll about this very subject some years ago-"Land of Hope and Glory" was the runaway winner.

The thing is, I am pro-Britain and pro-monarchy. I just think it could be done in a way more receptive to the Scots. I mean, the Union of the Crowns was foreseen by James VI of Scotland. I'm more than happy to see the UK continue as a sovereign state.

I hope those cunts at Chesterfield Football Club give us a bit of cash for writing a tune called Saltergate. At the very least they should give us free hats.

What's so "out-dated" about it, just because you don't like it?

Anyway, the "notion of nationhood" is a pretty fucking broad thing, if it's not your cup of tea would you prefer everyone to gelatinate into one big faceless sprall with no identity? I wouldn't.

As for God Save the Queen, it's pretty lame that God is in there (from a personal point of view), but understandable given how much Christianity has shaped this nation. I'm all for the Queen though, I'm a staunch royalist.

Making quote boxes this big is amazing.

And no, being part scottish doesn't make my opinion worth more.

It should be Dream Theater's 'Dance Of Eternity'.
