Here's an example of problems. A great lecturer at my college is South African, he grew up there. Being mixed race, he came under the 'Coloured' category (he told us how people were put into categories based on their colour under the apartheid regime). Anyway, here's his unfortunate story. He was on the path to becoming a top pianist in his country. But some bigwig bastards came along and smashed his hand in so it couldn't happen. Now he's a lecturer at Leeds College of Music. I've seen the scar on his hand, and as he was telling us about life in South Africa, I could see the emotional madness in his face. It was sad indeed.

Did your college get a white guy in too though? I know two South African/Rhodesian white families living here and you'd be surprised just how glossed over and one sided the allowed view of South Africa is.

No, but one of my old friends who is also South African is white (and Jewish), and many moons ago his dad told me all about South African madness when I was in school and researching it.

Unfortunately I can't remember much of it.

But I'm not trying to prove a point here anyway, this whole thing just reminded me of that sad story and I thought I'd share it with you. I don't know/can't remember enough to join in this debate. So carry on.

All this talk of the black folk reminds me of a great film called Amistad. Has anyone seen it? It's great.

One sunday evening at his house, it reported a shooting in SA where a guy had burst into a small village church and shot a load of black people, 6 of whom were dead. Later in the week, when i next saw him, he told me he was gutted, because one of the people who died was the son of a woman who used to work in the kitchen in his parents house as he grew up, and who he knew well.
