I should have written the words "for the umpteenth time" in my original post. I must have watched it at least fifteen times over the years now. I first saw it back around 1981 when they showed it on the BBC and it scared the absolute arse off me.
James Mason is excellent as Mr Straker and it could very well be David Soul's finest hour as an actor.
I remember getting scared shitless by the cliffhanger at the the end of the first part and the bit where Danny Glick scratches on the window, trying to get into his friend's house has got to be up there as one of the creepiest TV moments ever.
I'm re-reading the book at the moment too, and although there are some minor differences (character names, Mears has jet black hair in the book, not blonde, and Straker is bald as a coot), the mini series remains pretty faithful to it's source material.
I'm actually trying to download the Rob Lowe remake from a couple of years ago to do a full comparison but the damn thing's stuck on 99.6%!

I saw some clips of that on a 'Top 100' horror movie thing once and vowed never to watch it again because it was too scary.
The bit where the bloke falls into the grave, then the corpse jumps up out of the coffin is proper shit your pants scary,as is the bit mentioned above where he's scratching on the window to be let in.They don't make telly like that anymore.

The one I saw was when the kid with the horrible scary face floated through the window, it was so horrible yet still I watched!

Maybe the one I saw was different?

Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

Nope. Same thing. What you described was Ralphie "visiting" his brother at the family home, and then again later at the hospital during the first part. He floats up to the window and, like a total numpty, his brother lets him in both times. Result? Early dirt bath.
The elder brother then visits his best friend during the second part (the bit with the window scratching) but his mate susses him and tells him to do one (when did this turn into the cockney version)?
