Fair points. If we're talking about Slipknot, I reckon they were important in a completley different area of metal, and to be honest a fair bit of that was in production value, but that's a different story. The comparison's still not great though. Dime's death was definately saturated in the media, and I think it's a bit cuntish that people find ways to make money or earn respect by using his name, like, Trivium playing Razorbaks or Korn changing from the main stage to the Dimebag stage at last year's Download. He does get some more respect than maybe he should on the basis that he's dead, but it's fuck when you look at what happened with Kurt Cobain's death. Just before Dime died the media were still all over him anyway, particularly with the eminant release of the Razorback. Maybe it was more the guitar mags, or maybe it was just Future Publishing, they happen to make most of the mags I read.
I'm going to
Tear your fuckin' eyes out,
Rip your fuckin' flesh off,
Beat you 'till you're just a fucking lifeless carcass,
Fuck you and your progress,
Watch me fucking regress,
You were made to take the fall,
Now you're nothing!!
Tear your fuckin' eyes out,
Rip your fuckin' flesh off,
Beat you 'till you're just a fucking lifeless carcass,
Fuck you and your progress,
Watch me fucking regress,
You were made to take the fall,
Now you're nothing!!

Dime was a great player alright. I'd really have liked to have seen him jump ship to a better band though.

Judging by Damageplan, I don't really know what you have in mind Iain.
I don't really have a great deal to add. I do think it's a bit contradictory to say "let Dime rest in peace!" and then to celebrate a martyr-like anniversary, churn out a bunch of Dime related guitar gear, stage names and all the rest of it.
Musically speaking, everyone can appreciate Abbott's shredding abilities, and opinions are divided about Pantera themselves perhaps more than any other metal band. Personally I hate them and their disgusting macho music. Their catalogue seems peppered with a few cool riffs, the rest is garbage to my ears. I haven't checked out their early glam days, but I don't really care.
The main tragedy I suppose is the face the whole incident put on the metal genre, as the article on Blabbermouth illustrated, and of course the death of a man who seemed genuinely big-hearted and in love with what he was doing.
So in my view, why not leave behind the hype and say once and for all: Rest In Peace.

I was thinking along the lines of him being recruited by Rab Halford when he left Priest.

To be fair the Damageplan thing was a bit of a balls up. They did the album with a couple of restrictions in place to stop them sounding the same as they did in Pantera. After they made it they realised it was a bit half arsed because they were restricting themselves. Apparently the second album was a lot better, but I don't know if we're ever going to hear that.

Dime was a great guitar player but i think he owed a lot of it to the chemistry he had with his brother Vinnie Paul, particularly on the Far Beyond Driven album which had it's fair share of thrashy moments as did The Great Southern Trendkill. It's neither here nor there tho, r.i.p mate.
