had to go for kreator. they're all top class albums but pleasure to kill is just a beast!

haha because it is!! its really good for many reasons, unicron, universal greeting, being brave enough to kill off prime, the score is top knockers (apart from dare)....

but it just bores me, i saw it at the cinema when i was 5 and still remember how bloody amazing it was then, and LOUD, for my childhood it was the best thing i had ever seen, but now i watch it again and i fall asleep half way through. sorry! not even nostalgia saves it for me. there were just too many characters for me to even dare keep track of.

back on topic, even though i voted puppets, it was hard choosing between that and reign in blood, because that album is ferocious and it has MASSIVE balls.

Master of Puppets, no question. Still is and always will remain the pinacle of Metal.

I'm not much of a fan of most of the others anyway. Darkness Descends was too much about cramming in riffs with no thought to structure. Pleasure to Kill had aggression but little memorability in the riffwork. Reign in Blood isn't bad, and had a huge impact at the time, but it isn't actually that impressive a thrash album. Besides, it helped spawn thrash metal's immature, fat-headed, slutty bastard-child, death metal, I can never forgive it for that.

Afraid not, just the way I feel. It's an unusual combo, I know, but I adore thrash more than anything, yet despise death metal with a passion. Too mindless, too repetitive, too over-populated, too up itself, too try-hard and poser-ish.

Considering your logic, your vote is fairly logical but I will agree to disagree. Surprised you are happy to sell Morbid Saint so wildly if you like your thrash a step away from the deathly side.

I can't claim it's particularly logical, I know, it's just the way I am. It took me a bit to get used to The Saint, but when I did I loved them to bits. But try as I might, I just can't like death metal at all. When I listened to DD, RiB and PtK, those were my feelings on them. None of them awful, just never got me going.

I was serious. Considering you don't like the more evil, death-like side of things, MofP is a logical choice - a slicker, more straight-metal machine.

Oops, sorry, I mis-read your post, thought you said "Your vote is fairly illogical". My bad. Aye, you're right, Puppets does make sense given my tastes (which, in truth, it probably played a large part in shaping).

Not lynching, but just wondered how you can possibly credit slayer for helping spawn death metal? the music, structure, approach, vocals are all nothing like death metal. If yoou had cited scream bloody gore, seven churches or power from hell i could understand. Reasons please.

All those you cite are definitely major influences, probably bigger ones than Slayer, but I still feel Reign in Blood was a significant aid to it's development. The lyrical themes are the most obvious element, the total focus on death and the early signs of the gore that would dominate death songs (I know Slayer weren't the first nor the most extreme, but they were probably the most commercially successful and widely known of bands with "gorey" lyrical themes). The vocals also aren't death, but helped push towards it.

In addition, just the general vibe I get from it, the pace, the feel, the way the riffs are played with, the tuning.
