Just got back from that Star Wars exhibition at Excel

Postby Darkweasel on Sat Jul 14, 2007 10:28 pm

What a waste of time and money.
I had bought the wife and I's tickets from Play.com and was told we would be fast-tracked through to their designated ticket collection point to get us in asap.
Unfortunately, the queue of 700-800 people that greeted us as we got off the DLR had also been told the same thing...

After a long wait in that queue, we thought we'd have a quick look in the main exhibition hall before deciding what to do.
Bad mistake. We were told we had to join the back of the queue.
The queue which was so long we couldn't see the end of it.
We walked the length of the building and still couldn't see the end of it. We got up to the rear of the building and finally, we saw the tail end, all the way out of the back down more steps and down into an empty car park.

A (surprisingly) quick one and a quarter hour of waiting later and we were in.
Lucky for me that I'm not an autograph hunter. Mark Hamill (Luke) was there and charging £85 for a photo signature and the other cast/crew members were about £25 per sig average.
Oh, and you had to pay £30 just to join the queue!
It was so badly laid out inside that nobody could move and people were just getting shoved over and pushed out of the way continually.
The cafe was ridiculous. £6.50 for a sandwich? F**k off.

It wasn't all bad though. We got some nice photos of props and such but were so knackered from all the waiting, queuing and forcing our way through crowds like salmon swimming upstream that we left at 4pm.
The NEC does a sci-fi and football memorabilia fair twice a year and knows how to handle big crowds. It's always enjoyable and has a friendly atmosphere. Any friendliness today was dispelled by the security staff who, for the most part, were surly, obnoxious and just plain rude.

Excel will no doubt proclaim this weekend as a triumph, and rightly so. The amount of money they must have made off more gullible fans would be more than enough to make Abramovich jealous.
London can p*ss off. I'm sticking with the NEC where they know how to do this sort of thing properly.

It's your fault for being a Star Wars fan. I never had that problem when I went to the George and Mildred convention.

Did you piss on the props from the new films? It's your duty as a human being.

Nah, I was too busy laughing at the severed ewok head at the top of one of the display cases.

There was an exhibition at the National Museum of TV and Film that I went to a while ago, that was pretty cool. It was semi-permanent though... wasn't any signings are owt.

That museum remains the best one on the face of the planet, literally the only good thing to come out of Bradford - so many buttons..

You should have queued up to meet Mark Hamill and when you got to the front popped your knob on the counter and said "How much to suck me off,you talentless get?"

Harrison Ford FTW.

Then he would have done the Joker's voice and you would have melted where you stood. Never bad mouth the Hamill.

Yeah, she's pretty good as it goes. Decent taste in films for the most part but she doesn't like Robocop or Blade runner so she loses points there. She has been to a couple of gigs with me aswell and is coming along to see Alice Cooper/Motorhead in November.
I could have done worse.
