Death Metal: How brutal should it be?
I like my Death Metal somewhere in the middle. The melodic approach of In Flames etc. is too wimpy, but the out and out downtuned stuff with unintelligible vocals is too far the other way. Give me early 90s style, plenty of riffs, fast, with growled but semi-understandable lyrics anyday.

I like most kinds, apart from the metalcore style. BMTH suck a big fat dick, they really are a terrible band.

I like it old school most....a la Obituary, Morbid Angel etc...
I fucking love it!
I like others types though excluding In Flames etc... but some death metal does take the brutallity too far so it becomes a mess of detuned noise with pig squeals

OLD sounding! The best DM came out of Finland and Sweden in the early 90s. Can't stand most of the brutal stuff, bar the odd band, like Dying Fetus. I don't consider melodic stuff like In Flames as death metal, even though I like their first couple of records.

Stuff like Obituary and Death, i can't enjoy the more "brutal" stuff or the more melodic crap. I had somebody yesterday telling me that Death Metal is only the brutal stuff, and if its not brutal it isn't Death metal. So I asked, "So Death isn't Death metal" and then i got a lecture on how come Death are not Death metal, and that they are some type of metalcore. This guys is like........if it isn't Cannible Corpse its shite. God, people are very fucking wrong at times.

If Death weren't Death, what the hell ate they then?
I can see the argument that Death were Death in their early days, but weren't Death for the last few albums I guess, but I'd say that Death are Death.

I love the old death metal sound, Morbid Angel especially. I think that all these new 'brutal death metal' bands are actually making the death scene less and less extreme with every record they put out.
The old bands were great, although it was totally relentless, there was still an element of reserve and difference in their music that made their songs so much heavier when the vocals finally came in, or the kick drums started blazing. Now its just non stop all the way through, it seems they have forgotten to have great, well written songs under it all and not just this brutal bullshit.
Oh well, I always have Slowly We Rot and Altars Of Madness.

The music should be in the vain of Human by Death but with audible vocals. Like Control Denied, but better.
