As it's so far away, the life will have to have the same technology as us, or we'll never know.

It must be great being an astronomer, you can say what you like and no-one can say if you are right or wrong.

Apart from all the other astronomers. And all the people in jobs based around space.

Ok, they can speculate all they want. How can anyone prove what conditions are like on these new planets?

It doesn't seem very likely that there is life there, considering it is a 1500C gas giant...

Given size and distance, you can pretty much gather an idea. Ideal amount of light from the sun for life, decent rotation rate for a right amount of weather changes to keep the planet alive...etc...blah blah.

Also surely it can't get much sunlight, if it is over ten times further away from its star than Neptune is from the Sun.

Not life as we know it no, but who is to say what form life takes elsewhere in the universe? We can survive in the Goldilocks zone (not too hot, not too cold) so we automatically look for these conditions elsewhere.

I know, that has also crossed my mind many times - if there are crustaceans living around boiling vents in the pitch black deep ocean, who knows what life really needs? But it is pretty impossible to know what to look for in that case - how do we know there is not life in the gas clouds of Jupiter for example?

Based on what we know it doesn't seem like this planet is much of a candidate, but who knows.

I think in the distance we can see to, we're looking at the same stuff for life anyway. Although the distance is huge to us, in the universe that's not much distance. We'd have to be looking a lot further into space before we discover things that live in a completely different way to our own.

Well on this planet we have atleast one thing being able to live off one type of gas...or in a type of water...or breathe in this or that way...with this gas...with that gas. There's atleast one in every sort of situation you can think of. "Something that lived in water and lives off the iron content through..it's eyes.." - There'll be something.

We'd have to be discovering new liquids, gases, waters.
