Went on saturday night. It was pretty good, though not what i was expecting. I expected it to be far more political, not so sociological really. Very poignant in parts, funny as fuck in others. The producer of this film comes from just up the road from here!!!!!

Well all my local cinema is showing is Spiderman 3. 12 screens and like 4 films. Takes the piss really. I will get round to seeing it at some point.
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

Mr Wei, you have an excellent sig.

I really want to see this film, it sounds great. I've got to see Spider-Man 3 first though.

To be honest, I wasn't surprised it was more sociological than political, Shane Meadows has never really been a full on political director. I was expecting the film to shed some light on the whole skinhead culture for those who weren't around when it was in full swing and to remind those who were, and it certainly fulfilled that for me.

Well, that was my opinion any way, I'm not sure how others will react to it. Going back to politics, the one thing I did take away from it (other than the role of the Falklands war) was how the skinhead culture was ruined by ignorant racists who just latched onto it and sucked all the fun out of it. It's portrayed pretty well in the character of Combo. I hated him by the end of it.

And what exactly are the pros of skinhead culture? Because as i saw it, that was the whole point.

Well I think the first half of the film showed that there was a lot of unity between these working class kids regardless of race etc and it gave them a sense of belonging to something.

The Showroom is great. It was a right laugh listening to the pretentious cunts talking about the film as we left.

it seems they dont have it on at the new Vue in exeter. It's either the shitty old Odeon or the picture house, but only at weekends..... :wall:

Originally, skinheads were far from racist, and the music they were into was the reggae derived ska bands of the late 60s, this lasted well into the 80s, with not just two-tone, but also "proper" skinhead bands like the 4-skins, which is basically just ska with punk influence in the lyrics. The whole scene was hi-jacked by the racists as virtually a splinter group, but as time went on it came to prominance. Bands like skrewdriver and combat 84 formed the sub genre Rock Against Communism (indeed Skrewdriver raised funds for the NF with their record label White Noise). Thus history remembers the tolerant and passive skinhead movement more for the extremists that bastardized it. I fuckin hate racists!!!!!

Then surely 'This is England' is good in the way that it tries to inform people of the true origins of skinheads?
