I kind of agree. They mix it up proper on Ghost Reveries. The songs do sound all over the place. I think that if I listened to it A LOT I'd start getting it but a lot of the time I think music shouldn't be that much work. I mean, King Crimson, Jethro Tull and Tool took minimal effort (excepting 10,000 Days) but Opeth is like 'that's cool, yea- oh, it's gone...hmm not bad- oh it's gone again'. Be crazy and epic but make it a song!
I think it's a very good thing what they did with that album. Ghost Reveries is a pretty varied album, and yes it did take a bit of effort to get into, especially for me as that was my first Opeth album, but bloody hell it paid off. When you listen to it enough all the song structures do make sense. I actually think the structures were more forced on the earlier albums than they are now. To me it all sounds naturally lovely and there's a brilliant emotional depth to a lot of the stuff on GR. It really takes you on a journey into dark madness, I really really am in love with that album. All the tracks are amazing, apart from The Grand Conjuration which isn't amazing as it lacks the emotional intensity of the rest of the album, but it's still very good. The Baying Of The Hounds is the perfect example of why Opeth are one of the most brilliant and original metal bands around at the moment, and so is Harlequin Forest.

I think Damnation rules, by the way. But it is a very different Opeth album.
And Jon, I happen to really like The Grand Conjuration. Probably because it is so simple by comparison to the rest of the album...

Ha, that's probably right. It's actually quite strange how I never did enjoy The Grand Conjuration even that much at first, until I saw them play it live. I was mesmerised by their genius and loved that song a lot more (but still not as much as the rest of the album) ever since.
And yes indeed to Damnation, it's a truly brilliant album. Windowpane is another example of their brilliant dark emotional (without being too obviously emotional like gay idiot bands) goodness. I really can't wait to get The Roundhouse Tapes!

In conclusion.....Opeth are musical magicians of wonderment
oh and http://www.peaceville.com/opeth/ - Roundhouse tapes minisite with samples (good quality)
streaming of the entire thing: http://www.mp3.com/artist/opeth/summary/?tag=download;play
The qualitys meant to not be very good though so I'm gonna wait...
and something new Akerfeldt said about the new album:
*drool* I really hope the new album is good and it's not gonna ruin Opeth's no bad album status.

and something new Akerfeldt said about the new album:
All but one song is standard A tuning, the odd one is just a drop D. The guitars both sounds and intonates better so it was a choice from early on.
I like opening tunings though which is why I used it on some of the GR songs.
And for your information, the new album is now completely written and rehearsed and it's definately got more complex riffs, complex arrangements and drums than ever before! I don't find it boring at least. After rehearsals we're so tired due to the fact that we need to concentrate so much playing the songs. I felt sick after rehearsals for the first few days.
With that said, I think the songs are fucking awesome.
I just value how good a song is which has nothing to do with how technically advanced it is. But if you like hard to play stuff, you'll probably like the new bits!

The more and more I read about this album the more I orgasm. Bloody hell, I can't wait, I'm going to cry everywhere! I do have a tendency to hype albums up for myself a bit too much, but when I read stuff like that I can't help it. Akerfeldt seems to come across as an honest guy and I believe him when he says the new stuff is fucking awesome!

That would be wonderful, we should all sit in a really dark room and light some candles and all cry together.
