Threads and other scary Nuclear Movies

Postby thrashduck on Fri Mar 23, 2007 6:39 pm

I watched Threads last night, the classic 1980's British nuclear attack film set in Sheffield. So damn grim and a bit scary, but pretty excellent and thought provoking. Although all the way through, I could just imagine many a thrash band hammering out songs to people burning in the street.

Anyone seen it? Seen any other good nuclear war films?

I want to see that film. I've heard the description before, it sounds awesome.

To be honest we just don't see enough nukes in cinema. I primarily get my fix from TV. Jericho is about a small American hick town after a nuclear attack wipes out every major American city. 24 obviously plays on the theme of nuclear threat this season. My personal favourite is Battlestar Galactica, which starts with a nuclear genocide against all humanity. :D

Turn off the lights, put the cat out and take the phone off the hook. This is REAL horror.

I saw Threads when it was first shown on TV. It was kinda scary at the time (at the height of the cold war) too close to a potential reality for comfort. Too many meglomaniacs with their fingers on the button.

Yep great film. Also we're closer to nuclear war than we were for most of the cold war, or so the nuclear clock says.

Threads is one of my favourite movies, absolutely brutal. It's one of those films that you don't want to keep watching (especially if you know what's going to happen) but can't keep your eyes off!

"The War Game" is its predecessor and was banned by the BBC because it showed the police assisting in euthanasia and killing civilians.

Grim. The only criticism I have about the film is that the world situation wasn't really explained that clearly - What about the other nations? Did everywhere get fucked? How come there wasn't any aid?

there is a nuclear exchange between u.s.s.r and u.sa which esculates into involving Britain (and presumably other NATO countries) which basically means everywhere is fucked

Perhaps Australia and New Zealand would have been relatively unscathed (although surely feeling environmental effects) but their economies would have been shattered because of trade nations going down the pisser.

Been told to watch Threads countless times by a mate. I will do soon. On the subject of nuclear war films, I know it's obvious but how good is Dr Stangelove. Very well done, captures Cold War paranoia nicely and has some great lines...

Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Definitely captures the reality of what the world would be like, if such a nuclear disaster were to occur.

This reminds me off Nick Frost's danger 50,000 volts when he has a section on how to survive Nuke attacks....
He points to where i live and says a nuke would destroy the whole place...

Though Nuclear war is one of the ultimate horrors and radiation sickness is one of the worst ways to die...
