Your favourite films in the world

Postby jonny_boy34 on Sun May 27, 2007 12:49 am

Watching the last bit of Film 4's 50 greatest movies thingybob tonight has made me think about what my favourite films in the world are, and I have decided on a top 5. I would like you to please list yours and we can have lots of lovely discussions about whose list is better.

Now, The Lord of the Rings is basically on its own plane of existence and can't possibly be compared to any film in the world, so I'm not going to put that in. So the top 5 real films of my life are, in order:

1. Raging Bull
2. Apocalypse Now
3. The Godfather
4. City of God
5. Pan's Labyrinth

After watching the bit of City of God that they showed on the programme tonight, it reminded me of how stupendous that film is. I tried to explain to my housemate how good it was, and I actually found it impossible to put into words how mindblowing that film is. It's just simply one of the most powerful films I have ever experienced, and its one of those films whose power stays with you a very long time after it's over. In fact, that's what all my top 5 films have in common, and the reason they are my favourites - because they have all left me with a unique feeling of unbelievable madness that has stayed with me long after I watched them.

Raging Bull has been my number 1 non-LOTR film from the first time I saw it. Fucking hell, the raw power of that film is unbelievable. Robert De Niro's performance is pretty much the best piece of acting I've ever seen in a film, and it's just one of the most honest and brutal films I've witnessed. Martin Scorcese has a brilliantly slick style in most of his films, but its this one film where the true Scorcese really shines through. I woke up the next day and couldn't stop thinking about it. And that bit in the prison cell near the end is such a powerful moment of madness I don't know what to do, except chuckle a little bit at Robert de Niro's crying voice even though it's the best thing I've ever seen which makes me also want to cry at the same time.

Apocalypse Now just can't even be put into words. If you've seen it, you know what I mean.

Everyone knows how amazing The Godfather is.

Pan's Labyrinth is one of the most original and wonderfully made films I have seen ever. I have never seen anything like it, good lord. And it makes me want to weep like a bloody gay. The music in it's amazing as well.

Films that nearly made it onto my list are The Shawshank Redemption, Fight Club, Pulp Fiction and Schindler's List (not just because I'm a Jew, but because it really is amazing).

On a side note, this is me being the best: http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=2404471809

1. Dawn of the Dead - Just makes you think about EVERYTHING and all the material bullshit.
2. Day of the Dead - Makes me want to come back as a zombie. Seriously.
3. Dead Man's Shoes - Makes me cry every time.
4. Beau Travail - Best fucking ending ever.
5. This is England - It's THAT good.

I haven't seen any of those ones. Well I saw the remake of Dawn of the Dead and really wasn't very impressed, though I enjoyed the badass mutherfucker that is Ving Rhames. I really really want to see This Is England, and was planning to go and see it this wednesday, but it's not bloody on, so I think I'll probbaly go and see 28 Weeks Later instead. Or Zodiac, that looks good. Can't be arsed for Pirates 3, though I probably will go and see it when I'm back home.

I shall make it my business to watch them at some point over the summer. How do they rank alongside the Evil Dead films? And what about Night of the Living Dead, is that as good as its supposed to be? I watched the intro to it in one of my film music lectures and it just made me laugh, mainly because of the line "They're coming to get you Barbara!"

 Fucking Dead Man's Shoes is amazing! Good choice Martin!

My favourite film of all time is One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

If you have not seen it, or worse didn't like it i will end you.

Papillon is also amazing. The Last Emperor and Empire Of The Sun should both get mentioned also. Oh and the French Connection Films. Goodbye Lenin is also a really good film, it is in German. But don't let that put you off.

Now for the less serious films:

Mad Max 2 (Best apocalyptic film ever, plus it has the massively altered 1979 Ford XB Falcon in it)
The Wicker Man (The ending was the first film to scare me for a decade)
Conan The Barbarian (Because i love the Conan stories)
Drunken Master (The best Jackie Chan film, followed by Snake In The Eagles Shadow)
Big Trouble In Little China ("This is a good knife Mr Burton")
Total Recall (The Best Arnie film that isnt The Terminator)
Super Troopers ( "I Am All That Is Man!")
The Empire Strikes Back (Aka The best one)

Thats about all i can think of off the top of my head.
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

Thank the Police coming straight from the underground...

Pan's Labyrinth? Really? An excellent film no doubt, but I didn't know people felt so passionately about it. I guess Del Toro REALLY fucking exceeded himself there.

1. Hard Boiled (1992)
2. Ghostbusters (1984)
3. Aliens (1986)
4. Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn (1987)
5. The Prestige (2006)

Hard Boiled is my favourite film. This fact has not changed since I watched it for the first time at age 13. Equilibrium was going to be 5th, but it got clipped off by Bale's INCREDIBLE performance in The Prestige. Note how the Prestige is the only film on the list that was made in the past 15 years? Yeah, it's THAT good.
