Wanted: Custom Computer Build Jobs

Postby Craig on Thu Oct 09, 2008 11:45 am

After building my own machine and then doing another build for a friend of a friend, I've found that I quite enjoy building PC's - so does anyone here want me to build one for them?

If you're interested, PM me with a maximum budget and what type of thing you'd want (out-and-out performance, overclocking, media PC, bog standard box etc) and I'll get something together. The way it'd be done is order everything separately (processor, case, memory, hard drive etc) and have it delivered to me, then I put it all together, put it back in the box and post it to you (though you'd have to pay the postage).

Any takers?

Edit - 15/11/08

After having a quick look around for components, I can do a "budget" performance system for £850ish, including motherboard and CPU watercooling (graphics watercooling available, but costs extra). Obviously I can't do a concrete price until someone actually wants it, and what with all this credit-crunch and recession stuff happening, I know money isn't exactly plentiful.

Edit - 12/01/09

Final bump on this, I'd happily build PCs of any spec or price, it doesn't have to be a stupidly expensive performance machine, you can probably get a decent enough PC with a few years of life and expandability in it for around £500 maximum - including everything you need (monitor, Windows license, keyboard, mouse etc). If you're interested, PM me.

If you want it to be insanely fast, watercooling is the way to go  - plus it looks awesome!

My new desktop rig handles absolutely everything I chuck at it and doesn't break a sweat. Watercooling is actually pretty safe if you do it properly - I ran my machine through a 26-hour leak-test (just running the pump and fans) before I even put any kind of power into the motherboard.

I wasn't being sarky or anything, I actually totally do want water running through my PC.

My PC is insanely slow and old, and it likes to cry a lot of the time. I really need to get it sorted like. Mine can't even handle AOEIII.

A very decent spec PC would set you back about £650-700 air-cooled, and depending on how much of the machine you have on watercooling, that would be about £250-300 on top of that. My PC cost £1000 for the parts and £350 for the cooling.

Of course you don't have to go for performance, a good all-round PC would probably cost around £400-500 depending on what you wanted from it.

Depends on the screen size - probably around £500 to £600.

You'd need a fairly decent graphics card and processor. The ATI HD4850 would be fine if you're not using a monitor bigger than 22" widescreen and would be able to handle most things on high or maximum graphics settings. Processor-wise, the Intel Core2Quad Q6600 is fairly standard for performance machines - it overclocks like a demon and it's fairly cheap.

The main areas where prices will vary are the graphics card and any extras like cases, lighting, cooling etc, my own build being a pretty good example. I paid £160 for the case alone, £350 for the cooling setup and £180 for the graphics card.

I don't game much but if I had a decent spec I might, I use it mainly for music and pr0n, so what kind of set-up would I need? It would have to be as future proofed as possible, I buy a new machine every 5 or so years! Quad-core?

If you don't use the PC much then quad-core would definitely be good for quite a few years. If you're looking at storing videos and music, then 750GB or even 1TB of hard drive space would be more than enough, and seeing as Microshite will eventually pull support for XP in the next few years you may as well "upgrade" to Vista - which would mean a minimum of 2GB of RAM.

£400 to £500, £600 or more if you include a screen, keyboard, mouse and all that crap as well.

Ok thanks, I'll get saving again and this time hope the car doesn't go wrong to the tune of £400!

So what is beyond the realms of Quad-core, I thought that was the dog's bollocks at the moment?
