So how much does it cost to record a demo/album?

Postby metaldazza on Fri Sep 19, 2008 5:02 pm

Out of interest how much does it cost to record a demo/Album?. I don't mean pressing the CD's etc. I mean all the stuff that happens before that.

As some one who isn't in a band I don't understand why bands aren't spewing out demo's all the time. Once you've got 8 songs you like, why no just do it?

I'm not trolling, just curious. Please alleviate my ignorance :)

We payed £150 for the day, and the mixing was done the day after. £50 for another song. A day is usually two songs from my experience anyway.

I could record a full band set-up at home for free though, but it wouldnt be as good as some studios. You gotta make sure you get somebody who knows what they are doing with metal, and the band does too. Shit sound at the start, shit sound at the end.

Yeah, but because he mispelled everything, he suffered a severe defeat.

Thanks.... OK so two songs a day for a decent album that's £150 * 4 (assuming 8 songs) £600 quid. That's a lot of dosh... so my next questions:

What's the difference between a 'home' recording and a studio recording (in terms of end sound) ? Do most bands go to 'professional' studios? Why does a 5 minute song take half a day to record?

Dunno, takes longer with a lot of things. A home studio could b better than a professional studio if you have the right gear i think. 4 days to record and album if pushing it also.

In my opinion, you gotta be well rehearsed to do it all so quickly. And doing it all so quickly like that, it wont be the best of sounds, so having more time you can redo parts, get rid of mistakes you hear like after recording. Some other people will know better than me anyway.

SOD recorded speak english or die in less than 2 days, even writing some of the tracks in that time. Most bands are just gay and thats why it takes them so long to do anything...................

You have to set all your EQ levels, setting up a drum kit and putting all the mics on can take anything up to 12 hours while you're looking for a good sound before you've even hit the fucker with a stick. We did the guitars for the last album taking a full weekend, realised one string was slightly out of tune then scrapped the lot.

Studios on average are £150 a day but most staff at these places don't know how to set up a tone for metal bands so that's why most sound shite. It' all about whoever is twiddling the dials but the one's who do know thier metal tend to charge more.

Most bands want a 'profesional recording' like you say, but as it's so expensive (better gear, more trustworthy producer) cash normally has to be forwarded by a label then the money is recouped on sales (plus the cost of ads & press) etc before the band members see any money.

The catch 22 is that obvioulsy labels will only lay out money if they hear a good demo, combined with the safe bet that people will buy the product. So, if anyone wanted to get somewhere in the trade, I would say stump up a load of your own cash and do a good demo as opposed to a home bootleg as myspace is saturated with them.

Too much coffee? Yes.

Spend enough money to make a decent home recording setup.
