Any fans here. I'm sure I've mentioned my love for the man before, but I can't remember people's opinions.
Basically, I think this man is a true genius in every sense of the word. Trout Mask Replica is simply the greatest musical experiment I've heard. Actually experiment isn't the right word. It's not something that was sat down and planned and processed, it's a natural emanation of joy from this wonderful man's brain.
If people want a good starting place, go with Safe as Milk, then try something like Shiny Beast, if you enjoyed them take the plunge and get Trout Mask. Give it the dedication it needs, and you'll hopefully find it as rewarding as I do. Bloody hell.
Hoy hoy
When Big Joan comes out
Her arms are too small
Her head like uh ball
She tied off her horse
'n galloped off into the moonbeams
She pulled up her blouse
'n compared her navel to the moon
I dig my life for uh while
When Big Joan sets up
Her hands are too small
She's too fat t' go out in the daylight
So she rolls around all night
I'm just sorta thread
With uh drooped body
I'll set up with yuh Big Joan
I'm too fat t' go out
In the daylight
I'll stay up all night
I won't droop if you
Won't talk about your
Hands bein' too small
You know something's happenin'
Or you wouldn't of come out like yuh did
She ain't built for goin' naked
So she can't wear any new clothes
Or go t' the beach
They laugh at her body
Cause her hands are too small
When Big Joan sets up her hands are too smal
l She's outta reach
Uh turquoise scarf 'n uh sleeve
Rolled up over uh Merc Montclair
I'll sit up with yuh Big Joan
I'm too fat to go out in the daytime
I'll stay up all night
If yuh promise not t' talk
About yer hands bein' too small
Hoy hoy is she uh boy?

i remember having a drunken conversation with stu about the possibility of Beefheart actually being god, and if it were true then the universe would make so much more sense!
he is god! he must be surely, what an unbelievable indervidual!

Some Beefheart is very good. However, some people seem to think that if you make tuneless bollocks there must be a higher meaning. Trout Mask is the St Anger for those who consider themselves musically minded.

There's an unseen fortune under their belts
Are golden temples a symbol of God's way
This horde of wealth is a sickening display"

Trout Mask Replica is great, if eccentric.

This is the worst thing I've ever read.

St Anger is a piece of shit tha got bandered around at its release as either controversial and brilliant or just plain shit. It is just plain shit but because it is different and, ultimately, pretty unmusical people believe it must have more substance than it does. At the end of day, it's a load of fucking about.
Trout Mask is essentially the same thing but on a higher level. I'm sorry but it's mostly or people with their heads up their arses who thus can't hear properly.

Unbelievable.
There is nothing more to be found with St. Anger. It's a ridiculously simple album. The same cannot be said of Trout Mask. Just listen to all the parts going on. The band were holed up in a house rehearsing it for literally months on end before recording it, and they managed to replicate the songs live.
So do you think I pretend to like the album because I think there's more there?

I wouldn't be surprised if they recorded it and then spent months on end trying to work out how to play the noise that just made note 'perfect'.
I would never be so harsh to you Stu. I think you think you like the album because you think there is more than there is. I am not saying Beefheart's shit, just I know noise when I hear it. It is like Speedranch and other noise shit, which is very little else BUT noise only with more traditonal instruments. Ultimately, it is not THAT bad but it i wayyyyyyyyy overhyped.

Just to argue my point more... The album was transcribed to the band by John 'Drumbo' French from Beefheart whistling and playing the parts on piano. They didn't just get into a room and go, 'Let's all play something different'
Anyway, I'm off to listen to St Anger to discover it's hidden depths...

A lot of what I just said Stu was to be controversial but it does partially reflect my views. I definitely consider it overhyped. Meanwhile check out these modern beefhearts (I joke):

http://www.myspace.com/speedranch
http://www.myspace.com/cardopusher (hilarious!)
Man, I don't get this stuff

Where do you find this stuff?
But yeah, I know you like to be controversial and I know you have your own opinions that you will voice. Fair enough.
Is the album overhyped? Possibly. But for every shining review, there's an awful one.

WARNING!!!! THIS CD DOES NOT CONTAIN MUSIC!
So why is it listed here? Beats me! Probably because Frank Zappa has produced it. Anyone who has heard Zappas Lost Episodes nknows that he and van Vliet together with Bobby Zappa did all sorts of idiot experiments with musical instruments. They were lutionary and anarcistic and surely blew many dudes minds up. They broke barriers as one might say.
Stop arguing whether this is music or not. This isn't. Masterpiece maby but not in musical genre. It contains sounds, even human sounds, but it is performance as an art form. In that genre people are used to consume, see, hear, taste, you name it, ugly and digusting things. This recording is a masterpiece of ugly sounds. As music it does not exist.
I give it 1 star because zero is not possible. Yet I dont recommend this even to completionists. This is completely unnecessary piece of data.

Caps dude, seriously! what the hell are you even talking about. firstly you can't seriously be trying to argue that those 3 D'n'B / Hardcore acts are the modernisation of Captain Beefface. surely you are not a fool. also (and possibly very unsuprisingly to Stu) i think all 3 of those acts were awsome, and i may get a venetian snares record now. i had heard of them but never checked them out, cheers, they are fucking great!
now, if you are trying to tell me that the stuff those 3 acts produce is "just noise" then you are a hypocrite of the highest degree, i have one word for you... Discharge. to me the "its just noise" factor applies a hell of alot more to some of the stuff they have done than to anything compared to those boys or beefheart. correct me if i'm wrong but i'm sure if it wasn't for bands like Discharge we wouldn't even have a sub genre known as "Noise-core", i'm not saying thats a bad thing, i love discharge, but really maybe you have to realise that you dont "get" what these people are doing. the same way that alot of people don't like extreme metal or grime or hip hop etc. if you don't understand what is going on then you will find it hard to appreciate. sometimes its hard to get into different types of music or find something to connect with. thats fine, but there is no use trying to slag off something you don't understand yourself! thats just ignorant. you ignorant cunt.

Trout Mask contains some of the most increadible melodic and rhtymic treats known to man, his lyrics are increadible and to me his music is both vivid and visceral in equal mesaure. thats something quite rare especially when its done in such a way as on
that album.
now if you want some real noise check these guys out... and again definately unsuprisingly to anybody that knows me, i think all these guys are great!
http://www.myspace.com/cthonicrites - MOSS - i've got their album, i play it very loudly!
http://www.myspace.com/monarchuberalles - Monarch - got their latest split 7" they did with Moss, its great!
http://www.myspace.com/wmangler - Wolfmangler - got their last album "'Dwelling in a Dead Raven for the Glory of Crucified Wolves", its the bleakest of beautiful things.
for this last treat White Mice, i think this Youtube clip best sums them up -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNfuesQnsBE
I wish i had been at that show! They were supporting fucking Lighting Bolt and the support band before these guys did this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8OjH5Qjc50

Beefheart, and Trout Mask in particular, I find to be ridiculously hilarious. It sounds like drunken madness. However, I can't say it's rubbish, because I don't know what's going on. I heard some Beefheart from a different album of nice that Stu played the other night which was really good. But it's also really hilarious. When I'm in the right mood, I'll listen to it a bit more, and I'll say it's nice, but Tool are better.
