I found this on Digg, they say it's a trick of the brain, sort of like a visual illusion for your ears. These sounds are recorded using two microphones attached at ear height to a model head. Theoretically, the human ear always hears sounds which are based upon their position on the head. Therefore when these positions are emulated using microphones, and our ears hear the same audio in stereo, the brain interprets them based upon the reverberations of the human head and creates the ILLUSION of sound origin. Your brain turns stereo into true surround sound.

I just thought.. my camcorder came with this microphone thing that was like ear phones. Put one in each ear and it records in stereo. Never tried them though, and I've probably lost them now. I'll have a look and record something to see if it works.

Well, basically. The surround sound aspect (how you can hear sounds above, below, infront or behind of you) is just an illusion.

*edit* THIS is how you'd usually record it. It costs 5 grand, but you'd get the same effect with a mannequin head and two standard mic's.
