Indeed, Automatic For The People is a great album. It's a shame REM are so terribly mediocre these days.

Again, U2 were actually really good until around Achtung Baby and I know a hell of a lot of people that love that album too. I don't find that easy to say in the face of Bono's personality either.
Come to think of it, Pop and All That You Can't Leave Behind aren't too bad either though, like the Manics, they're a band I'd have to go back and re-listen to.

Gorbachev - celibate self importance
Yeltsin - failure is his own impotence
It's the old 'Name Drop Political Titans and Combine Them With Meaningless Rant to Make People Think You Know What You're Talking About' shtick.
We're clearly not going to agree on this, but what makes Revol so good is that it is nothing more than a perversely silly burst of energy following (and preceding) a bunch of thoroughly nasty songs. It doesn't seem worth taking seriously in itself, especially given the fact it's sandwhiched between a song in favour of brutal capital punishment and another written from the perspective of an anorexic revelling in her own slow death.
I barely listen to anything other than metal these days, but I've still yet to hear a metal album that's genuinely darker than The Holy Bible.
As for the rest of the Manics stuff...well, it's catchy and stuff

A silly burst of bollocks more like!
The Manics are complete fools and are Welsh. I actually like Welsh people, but only if they aren't arseholes. The Manics, however, are bigger arseholes than Metallica.
