If those were lyrics, surely you would be doing the same as what they are?

Maybe they actually have reason for hating what they take the piss out of, the same you do with 'tracksuit wearing thickheads'?

I like to think that my dislike of the these people stems from actual experience of their narrow-minded thieving selfish behaviour. Fair enough though, it may be that I am a horrible hypocrite and these guys are really intelligent and sensitive souls. I'll be sure to ask them their real motivation next time I see them throwing stones at old ladies or trying to set cats on fire.

However you don't see me mocking such people by acting like them and espousing their views, do you? That would be counter productive. It'd be like hating racists and deciding to mock their views by singing a song that was totally xenphobic and stupid...

I quite think that making fun of something by pretending to be like it is very funny, like John Cleese doing his german thing in Fawlty Towers, is that offensive now?

You can't expect them to sign up for the army, be trained to kill and even lay down their lives if necessary and then not be expected to do just that when push comes to shove. It doesn't matter if some people think the War In Iraq lacks legitimacy, soldiers have a job to do and they should do it unquestioningly because it isn't there place to do so; they're soldiers, not politicians.

Perfect answer, and exactly how I feel. It's their fucking job, you don't hear builders complaining about having to lay bricks. If you sign up to a job where being able to kill someone is part of the job description, you should get no sympathy for living up to your commitments.

However, I don't really hear troops complaining about that part. Just the bleeding hearts at home.

Complain about the organisation but not the very things the men sign up for.

I think the point is here is that, for me at least (not that I'm giong to get into this debate but I just thought I'd make a comment), it's not clear whether this song is taking the piss out of the northern stereotype or whether it actually is a racist song. It's like people who think Borat actually is racist, when really he's just making a complete mockery of the Jewish stereotype and also taking the piss out of anyone who thinks he's actually serious, especially the people he interviews. That is very hilarious indeed. If Sacha Baron Cohen actually was a real racist (which obviously isn't true) then it wouldn't be funny. But with this song, some people here obviously believe these guys are being serious - I, myself, am not sure.

I'm tired and I can't be bothered to argue. I will just agree to disagree. I will say the following things though:
- Iain, Maddie has been back in the press. Not just on the BBC but all over the papers today and yesterday as well as intermittently during last week.

- I take issue that anyone should do anything without question.

- I think the purpose of the army is to protect this country or - in rare situations - other countries. If it has any purpose at all. Fair enough if you think soldiers are there to do as they're told.

- Humour is subjective. I was wrong to say 'funny is funny'. However, I think humour that targets groups and is based on prejudice is often unfunny. And that includes ginger jokes, disabled jokes etc. There are situations when they can be amusing but I find this to be the case only when used for ironic purposes. This answers the Fawlty Towers question - the comedy came from how shockingly inappropriate Basil behaved. I accept this is a difficult line.

- Stewart Lee covers the issue of prejudice and racism in comedy very well. Watch Stand Up Comedian to see it in action - specifically the area on Ron Atkinson and Jimmy Hill.
"And what about the churches and all their wealth
There's an unseen fortune under their belts
Are golden temples a symbol of God's way
This horde of wealth is a sickening display"
