I know drinking on public transport has just been banned but I found it hard to believe it was allowed in the first place.

It's a tricky one, because you can get your booze tipped down the drain in somewhere like Camden, but thousands of people must sip beer in parks and get away with it.

This is what happened to me for getting caught sipping cider in a car park a couple of weeks ago:
BAM!
£40 fine. They fined me but not the six others I was drinking with. I think the funniest part was that it was cider to be honest.
