creative art or just sick and evil?

Postby radioactive rik on Fri Sep 26, 2008 6:07 pm

ive recently purchased some of the more extreme 1985-early 90s era manga movies

i watched this yesterday :rockdevil:

fist of the north star 1986 anime movie pretty much sums up the whole story in 2hours compared to the old repetitive 36 episode series i used to own.(i got bored after episode 14 or so and ebayed it for a lovely little amount.)
manga ent.uk also put such an annoying modernised soundtrack of drum and bass music to the series which was really distracting/irritating and replaced the original theme. :wall:

the chinese multiregion version of the movie i got off ebay was uncut and had 18mins of footage which was removed in the uk version.
also it was english language dubbed/voiceovered anyway which was really handy.

dont mention the fucking awful gary daniels american adaptation of this movie  :wall:

the BBFC really piss me off.you would think that the films they butchered and edited so much on video would finally have aged enough that the original scenes could all have been put back in.

last week much to my horror i found out on wikipedia and through google research on censorship/running times/anime data bases etc that my uk manga label version of Urotsukidoji legend of the overfiend and legend of the demon womb had almost 1whole hour cut out of it.over 55mins just under A WHOLE FUCKING HOUR!!!
basicly in japan it was originally a 5part series over 4hours long which was rehashed into a 2part movie feature in the west.

although overfiend was still very disturbing with 42mins missing(the other 14 or so mins were missing in demon womb)when i originally watched it i still went and tracked down(for a pretty steep price)the fully uncut one which is now very rare.there are even 2 on amazon at $200!!!!

anyway this next link is of the comparisons(enjoy it Billy ) ....
http://www.schnittberichte.com/schnittb ... php?ID=496 scroll down these pages at your own peril.....

i cant be arsed to get the follow ons ie:urotsukidoji new saga etc as the above are the originals and i just want the complete versions of them how they were intended to be seen by the makers.

next i move onto wicked city.its on its way in the post hopefully get it 2moro
i havent watched this one before but again after comparing the different covers pics and info about running times i realised there various cuts and versions.the definitve one being 7-8mins difference compared to the most cut one.

the same site also had the comparisons...
http://www.schnittberichte.com/schnittb ... ID=4576463 not for the easily offended

earlier on today i watched Devilman a region 3 version again with handy english dub and full versions of part 1 and 2.
it was wicked and was apparently the prequal to violence jack.jack is the unofficial reincarnation of devilman.
(due to both the characters being originally created by Go Nagai)

check out this youtube clip...

but yeah are they all animated masterpieces, pushing the limits of imagination?
or just sick, twisted and totally unecessary?

NOTE:i say the english voiceovers were handy because i was assuming they would all be in jap or chinese languages and only have english subtitles so it was a bonus that they were dubbed.
i guess at some point in the vhs days, the films have had to be fully dubbed into english before they were submitted to the bbfc.so the master versions must have been sent back or stored at the anime studios until an opportunity for an uncut re-release in the future.

Here's an interesting fact for you: on that DVD, there's a special feature where Gary Daniels is fighting with another man in a training environment, and that man is none other than my brother, who likes to call himself Dan Cade because he thinks he's an actor.

cool fact man.i take it thats why youre into quite a few action movies.

also Gary Daniels is in a decent low budget action movie called Bloodmoon.aprt from that i dont rate his other movies that highly.i was sooo disappointed when i shelled out £16 for the "gary daniels" fist of the north star movie 2disc set when it came out.

he is a great uk based martial artist.but its a shame he never really got bigger roles/better movies to star in.

but his stand out moment has to be as a bad guy and as Ken from streetfighter in Jackie Chans city hunter movie.(which was also a manga adaptation)

by the way,Dan Cade is a badass acting name :rockdevil:

yeah sometimes they bring down the potential seriousness of the movie when they dub it over.in the original jap language they tend to have more impact/emotion but then who want to read subtitles on animated movies.

how about the others? fist of the north star has cliche thrash post apocalyptic elements and biker gangs etc.

i could partly agree if you think urotsukidoji is a load of bollocks.....its also tentacles, tits and all sorts of other anatomy too

Fist of the North Star is awesome. I love it because mindless violence is funny, and Hokuto Shinken is the most far fetched fighting style ever invented (not including that DBZ stuff, but that doesn't count because it's just fucking gay).
