Doom

When did all this Doom fever come from?!

I swear there hasn't been so much Doom around for at least a few years.

I CANT STAND THIS SLOW MUSIC GAARRHGGGEGLG.

I also apologise that this thread isn't about the game Doom; which incidentally is awesome.

Unlike the genre. Bah.

Oddly enough Papa F, I've been listening to tonnes of Candlemass, Pentagram and Trouble recently, great bands! I suppose they are more um, 'mainstream' doom though ay? Also, Black Sabbath! Groink!

But I do tend to like FAST/HEAVY most.

It's one of those things I have to be in the frame of mind for... and I just hardly ever am!

Ah well.

It's quite funny that for someone who's such a stoner you don't like anything that's less than about 200 bpm. Haha!

Ha ha!

Yeh I'm still trying to figure that one out myself..

But more to the point.. has Doom always been this big? Or am I right in thinking it's either grown or made a big of a resurgance(sp)??

Doom's pretty much been my favourite metal genre for the past year or more, and like every other style there is loads of catching up to do.

There's far more to it than being 'slow', just like there's more to decent death metal than being 'fast' or 'brutal'. I still love the fast stuff, but I find there are so many doom bands with distinctive identities, and it is a genre which can convey such power with atmosphere, lyrics and pure heaviness that other styles don't often match.

Some doom I've been enjoying in the last couple of weeks are The Lamp of Thoth, Gods Tower from Belarus (really cool folky edge), the first Reverend Bizarre album (by far my favourite of theirs!), The Obssessed's 'Lunar Womb', Hour of 13's amazing debut, Procession's mighty 'Cult of Disease' EP, and lots of Pentagram!

I'm sure those bands have material you would like Faraz. Not all of it is super slow (unless you're on about droney stuff that I don't really like either), and bands like Candlemass and Trouble have plenty of chugging headbang moments!

And yeah it does seem like the worldwide doom scene is pretty healthy at the moment (and arguably more fruitful than the thrash 'comeback'), especially regarding US bands, though I'm too much of a newcomer to be able to detect a 'resurgence' of any sort.

Yeh, maybe I just need to check out more of the bands.

An example:

I'd say, despite the obvious bias, that I am a Dead Existence fan. However, most of the bands I've seen when I've gone to see them play, are just genuinely uninteresting. 5 notes in a song. Half an hour long. etc etc.

So yeh. Maybe I'll just sit in Jon and/or Jamie's car for a bit. Ha ha

It does seem to be having a resurgence at the moment that's for sure. For me it is a really interesting genre as it's full of atmosphere and such, but i'll readily admit that there is a lot of fucking shat out there.
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

I didn't think it was actually going through a resurgence, I just thought more of our friends were getting into it at the moment, so we've noticed it a bit more.

It's been in the music press (sorry, extended adverts) a bit more recently. But yeah i think it is likely due to all the silly drugs i've smoked, silly me.

But Faraz i finally listened to hail of bullets today, and for my least favourite metal genre they are not bad indeed.

I know ill get slated for what is common sense.

It annoys me when people say Black Sabbath is Doom, there Heavy Metal they just had a huge influence on more modern doom bands sound with two albums.

Sabbath was out way before doom was established as a genre.

Really I dont think there is anymore around now there there was before, your just aware of it more. Just the rock n roll circle changes all the time just to keep things fresh.

Yeah, I'd also call Sabbath Heavy Metal. They have many slow songs, and they probably accidentally invented doom, but they also invented everything, because they did everything ever and they were the best.
