Building the Beast - It's Alive!

Postby Craig on Mon Jul 28, 2008 5:07 pm

OK so this isn't nearly as dramatic as the title sounds, but I've just taken delivery of and built my new PC - and it's a fucking beast

I won't bore with the nitty-gritty specs, but this should sum it up: quad-core, ATI HD4870 graphics card (currently the world's second-fastest card), 1TB of storage (750GB for data, 320GB for operating systems), nice powerful power supply, 2GB of the fastest RAM the motherboard can support. The only other way to describe it is "immense".

Old build (left) and new build (right):

It cost me a grand to put together (I ordered the parts from three different suppliers then put it all together myself) and I'm ridiculously pleased with it :D.

Looks pretty immense, but one point about the graphics card... YOU. DON'T. PLAY. GAMES!!!

Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

Valid point, but pretty much the entire point with the whole build is to try and future-proof myself as much as possible, so I don't have to keep tweaking and upgrading it every year or so.

The previous build was done on a £500 budget and has probably cost at least an extra £200 over the years, the core is the same (Intel Pentium D 3GHz, 2GB DDR2 533MHz generic memory, entry-level motherboard) so it's showing its age a bit. I don't necessarily need to do a new build now, but while I have the cash and the market is pretty stable for new parts I may as well :)

That's a fucking beast, it purely deserves that title. Get a bird in a bikini to lean over it like in Max Power.

Old PC - You've been pimped.

Photo of the beast's head - namely the 22" HD monitor (one of my previous two 17" TFTs is next to it - I'm still running a dual-screen setup):

Building the Beast Part 2: Cooling the Beast

Postby Craig on Wed Aug 27, 2008 6:45 pm

I don't even know why I'm writing this, it's going to be of little or no interest to everyone here but fuck it

Again, not nearly as dramatic as the title sounds, but the second stage in the build process has now started - watercooling the entire PC. It's my first attempt at any kind of custom modification to a PC so I've spent over two weeks sourcing parts and getting advice from various forums, as well as £350 on the actual gear itself (on top of the £1000 I spent on the initial parts for the build).

Everything (pump, radiator, tubing, fans (all six of them) and waterblocks) has been ordered and dispatched, bar two bottles of cooling fluid (distilled water with a load of chemicals to help heat conductivity and reduce electrical conductivity) which will hopefully be delivered next week. The weekend's job will be measuring and cutting all the tubing, fixing everything in place inside the case and double-checking all the fittings.

I've already overclocked the processor (Intel Core2Quad Q6600) to 3GHz from a stock speed of 2.4, so hopefully the extra cooling should get it to 3.5 and above. I just hope I don't fry anything

I was being clever. I'm really jealous, I need a new PC. This one is five years old and really showing it's age. It has two speeds, slow and very slow.
