Personally i think it was Robert Johnson, as he was the first Guitarist to play in a style considered anti-establishment and beyond acceptable parameters and that was in the 1920s!!!!

Yes I remember the shredding section in "Kind Hearted Woman Blues", but what about Blind Lemon Jefferson? He pre-dated Johnson.

I was a big Queen fan before I got into metal full time,Brian May was the first guitarist that inspired me to take up the guitar.
I can see the riff resemblence in Brighton Rock.Although before that in the early 70s on some rare as rockin'horse shit prog rock records there are other early hints of speed metal and such.
If you can find it,a band called Suicide and their album 'Stray'has some mad (for that time) moments.

I think it should also be pointed out that 'Princes of the Universe' almost sounds power metal if you ask me. Dunno if anyone else has noticed it. I know that Hansi Kirsch of Blind Guardian was apparantly inspired by Queen.

Bunch of art school fuck-wits.
......and they played in South Africa during the apartheid regime- that alone makes them scum of the earth (along with those other racist faggots Status Quo and Rod (grandad) Stewart.
