Dad, I want to learn the guitar

Postby terrorizer on Sun Jul 19, 2009 12:42 am

My eldest lad had expressed an interest in learning the guitar, so I'm looking for a cheap but playable instrument suitable for a ten year old. Any suggestions? It has to be electric as the ability to make some noise with it will hopefully captivate his young mind, and he is left handed too. I have an amp, leads etc., so it's just the actual guitar I'm after. I don't want to spend a fortune on it, just in case he loses interest in a months time after he realises that he has to really work at it.

Thanks!

hmm were you looking to buy an actual left handed guitar? makes everything more expensive instantly.... i would only recommend that you dont buy a squire, but im sure you already knew that- they are overpriced pieces of shit usually,

my first guitar was a black Dean baby ML, that was like 3/4 size (so a little bit more playable then the full size ML's) and cost like £50 from ebay, good times lol...i hate that guitar beyond words :D

Aye ebay is your best bet. As stated, everything is instantly going to cost more if your boy is left handed so...

... force him to play right handed, or string it upside down?

I know left handed people who play right handed, and they see it being okay that way because the left hand does most of the work. Let him try some out i guess.

Yeah, as he is starting out anyway, get him to learn right-handed, will save you money and hassle in the long run.

Also, Argos do a deal that gives you an electric guitar, amp, strap and lead all for really cheap. Get him something like that and if he sticks with it, he can eventually progress to something better.

Make sure his interest in guitar stays peaked, when you are young, you can get bored with things easily. Make sure he has a constant stream of new things to try out. If you don't want to get a tutor, Youtube is your friend. There are many videos for beginners that will keep him informed.

Happy strumming!

left handed guitars shouldnt be more expensive than a right handed version

and it doesnt really matter what guitar it is if he's just learning, just make sure you get someone to set (or help you set) the string 'action' up so its actually playable! :P

It might not have got you chicks. There are some people even the guitar cannot get laid.

Actually that is one of the reasons I gave him. He's too young to understand though.

Something for the future, which a lot of guitar players don't seem to understand..

A bad guitar played through a good amp will sound better than a good guitar through a bad amp.

What about a bad guitar played badly through a brilliant amp, does this sound better than a good guitar played badly through a bad amp?

in that situation just take your distortion pedal and put the gain up as high as you can, De tune the guitar to drop D and play through the tasty amp and it will probs sound amazing lol

I'm left handed and was kind of forced to play right handed as a lefty bass used to start at £350, you can pick them up for the same price nowadays. It doesn't really matter which one you get as at the beginning he can't play it either way.

Best bet would be to copy & paste ebay links up and ask if anyone has had one of them.
