Battle Of The Bands = Have they been useful or wank?

I read a load of buletins on Myspazz that had the title of VOTE FOR US & it brought on this cider enduced post of my own, since then I've spent an hour chatting to people that have been bummed over in the past. Some stuff is really bad.

Bands playing BOTB'S

The advert always goes something to the tune of 30ish bands of none matching genres (all playing for free) playing to win some poxy equipment or getting one day in a recording studio . Here's a thing about that.....

IT TAKES 6/8 HOURS JUST TO GET A HALF-DECENT SOUND OUT OF YOUR DRUMKIT! GET A FUCKING GRIP.

Normally the person that mixes it (because you're not around as you've ran out of time aaages ago) has no fucking idea what to do with your bands sound either.

Next time you feel like playing in a competition, stop and play with yourself instead. Stop gigging for nothing & dragging your mates along to watch desperate indie bands stare at you all cluelessly.

I've played a fair share of battle of the bands but never in one that won. I won best guitarist at the ones that did individual awards though.

I think they're fine if it's your average high school bands but beyond that, no.

BOTBs are, by and large, shite.

Although it would be fun doing a non-competitive* one with UK Thrash bands.

*H.O.D. Would probably win.

The only person in the history of my school to have been involved and to have won it twice in a row.

They're shit. From my experience there are 2 different types of Battle of the Bands...

There's the one that goes off the crowds vote, which means that which ever band brings the most friends, will win, or which ever band lives closest to the venue.

The other kind is the one with judges who decide the winner, which again usually goes to a band that one or more of the judges is friends with.

Battle of the Bands are fucking shite.

I was in a talent contest at school when I was 11, we did skits of Shooting Stars, Red Dwarf and the Fast Show. We completely kicked ass, everyone else's was shitty 5ive covers.

But we lost because the teachers all bummed this group of girls. Probably literally. Bloody paedophiles.

We did one once and the winner was picked even before we played our set - needless to say, it was the last BOTB we participated in. Waste of time.

We have never bothered with them, due to all that stuff. But like somebody said, a UKThrash one with no real award would be fun.
