There's a conversation that started on the Gigs section of all places that I feel needs further discussion so I've moved it to here.

There is a generation gap between myself and a lot of the other posters on here (perhaps I should change my username to Dad?) The tales of people using drugs to stay up for days has shocked me somewhat. When I was at Uni I didn't see any drug use until my final year and that was a joint passed around at a party! It just seems more wide spread nowadays and the different types, the harder ones, the speeds, pills, ketamines seem part of daily life for some. Is this true? If these people are students how the hell do they afford them? I struggled to buy a few pints a week on my megre Grant. Or am I just getting old and behind the times...

Well I'm sure everyone knows who is into that kinda stuff if they aren't into it themselves. It's just pretty accepted I guess, amongst "da yoof".

Personally, I've not done anything past weed, and wouldn't really want to either, cos I'm a bit of a chicken and would be afraid to die.

Anyway getting back to the shocking tales, staying up for days on end wired begs a few simple questions: Why? What on earth do they fill the extra time with? What is wrong with sleep anyway?

Studies have shown that extended periods without sleep can have a dramatic effect on the brain, some of these could be long term. I saw a TV programme about a DJ who stayed awake for a week in the 1960s and his entire character was changed by it, he left his wife soon after.

I'm exactly the same as thrashduck here. I don't know too many people who take those kind of drugs either, although one particular friend of mine has tried various drugs recently, and he has turned into a right twat since he went to uni. Don't know if there's any connection there. I personally don't see the point, but I would be interested in finding out why other young people do it.

They're cheap. Pills for example are only a few quid. Don't know how much K or speed are though.

I think the reasoning behind it is that drinking you'll easily spend about 40-50 a night ( well.. I do! ) and a pill, for 3/4 quid, have it's effect for cheaper.

For me theres nothing like being drunk, it's wickid! But I confess to being a bit of a drug fiend on occasion.

There's a lot to be said for being a two pint screamer then! The old "I can handle my beer" line is crap, I'd rather spend a fiver and be pissed than 20 quid and not be!

I'm not the type that mixes well with drugs, even weed a good amount of the time fucks me up, but I know/knew many people who did other stuff at uni. It seemed fairly easy to get hold of for them, and K especially turns people into complete zombies. Seriously, they go Grey and just sit there doing nothing, it's pathetic.

I smoked weed for six years (kind of wish I hadn't) and cigs for a bit longer, I also did mushrooms, beans and MDMA. Fun for a while, now I just drink. I stopped smoking because of palpitations and paranoia and stopped pills and MDMA because rave type places were the only times I did them and I don't really go to them anymore. I still want to do mushrooms though, they were well fun!

Oh yes! A UKThrash mushroom outing must happen!

I used to do weed along time ago, then had to stop cause I joined the Police. Then I left I dont really think about it, it was just a faze just like drinking beer.

I still rage but I prefer to go to my local have a few and get the last bus home. As the cost to stop out any longer is like a £15 taxi home more then anything.

I've smoked weed obviously, and I've done some mdma on a special occasion, and the odd trip on mushies but I couldn't get into harder stuff regularly. Its nice for a different buzz when you're in the mood but having seen the state of some of my friends I know where to draw the line!
