Apparently many adolescent "metalheads" are extremely bright and often use the music to help them deal with the stresses and strains of being gifted social outsiders.

I rarely if ever need to listen to them now. As a Christian, I have other coping mechanisms like prayer, spiritual music and more positive thinking. I was a closet Christian in my youth and I think the music had some spiritual meaning to me.

What worries me is the Satanically-inspired metal bands of today that are literally turning some of their fans into spaced-out little demons. I had personal experience of one that was incredibly angry and vicious – and passionately anti-Christ as encouraged by the lyrics. I would say the young man was demon-possessed.

That music seems to have the opposite effect of Ritchie Blackmore’s, and as some of the old bands gave some sort of spiritual meaning and sense of belonging to me, it makes sense that this Satanic music really does have a dangerously negative effect on listeners as they too search for spiritual meaning and belonging.

Quite interesting.

I generally think that most proper metal fans are quite intelligent and with-it sort of people, to have delved into a genre that they are not channelled into by the everyday world.

However, I don't think the point about them being socially isolated people with low self-esteem holds much weight. Of course there will be cases of this in heavy metal more than other genres because it is a relatively 'outsider' genre (not including mainstream metal of course).

Incidentally, I tend to dislike those who are in to metal simply to release their silly social anxieties or to fashion themselves as 'different' to normals.

It's about the music.

Indeed, most metalheads are some of the nicest and most intelligent people you will come across. There's just a fucking huge difference between us and... slipknot kids.

Yeah, but in saying that you're typecasting as well. I'm sure there are 'Slipknot kids' that are a lot more intelligent than us.

That is a real stretch of the imagination. I've tried to have serious convos with a couple of them, but they are just filled with half baked theories and full fat opinions.

I've unfortunately gone through the "nu-metal" period where Slipknot ruled and so forth, so this kind of shit was pummelled into your brain every hour of the day through KERRANG or whatever.

Now, having learnt what is right, with a hopefully unblinkered vision of metal, I find it hard to discuss music with people of my age (19,20) who still wear "disturbed" hoodies. Seriously. The only arguement I can really accept is "in my opinion I like (insert band name)".

Fair enough dude. Now fuck off.

My two year old's already started showing real signs of intelligence then. She headbangs and dances to metal bands quite frequently.
Especially Slayer.
