Mind you seeing how Black Widow are being mentioned, I'll mention Coven. Again not proto-metal but also very dark and menacing, plus Jinx was the first to use the 'Devil Horns' and bizarrely they had a bassist called Oz Osbourne!? They also painted red inverted crosses on Black Sabbath's dressing room doors allegedly. She also claims they were well aware of Coven when Sabbath went dark.

Whether this is all true of course, who knows?

I heard about that Coven thing too, they even had a song called Black Sabbath in like 1968 (was it??)

I think that was roughly the time they released their album. They're mentioned in the Lords of Chaos book.
