Elder Scrolls...

No not the game, but something much more geeky: I went to the National Archives today to check out some documents I'm writing an essay about! It was great, I ordered my documents, waited about an hour then I was free to browse and photograph them.

My main aim was just to measure them and get some general pics of their appearance - I can't really read the writing and my Latin sucks balls anyway. But it was just a cool trip, and it was cool to see the real version of the translated book I've been using for the essay. By the way the essay is about the royal forest of Northamptonshire in 1255, and law cases relating to deer poaching ('pleas of the venison') which were heard by the travelling forest judges every 7 years.

Here are some pics of the mission:

The roll, before... unrolling. It's pretty small as you can see:

I also had a brief look in the Pipe Roll for 1255, which is a much more extensive record of the king's yearly income. It was much bigger with better writing, but I couldn't really make any use of it; still a cool object though:

Anyway, total nerd feast, but it was exciting and quite humbling to handle documents penned 750 years ago, which have sat on various shelves since the Middle Ages!

Researching for essays is generally quite cool, except when you translate half a book and find nothing that you can use in your essay.

Yeah, personal research is my favourite part of academia - I don't particularly like presenting info to people, and the write-up can be quite burdensome (but satisfying once done well). I've got this far without really needing to do any translating luckily, and as I currently have no PhD plans, I'll probably get by on primary sources that are already published.

I had to translate a bunch of stuff from Estonian into English about the Estonian War of Independence last year. Whilst it was quite interesting because a lot of it had never been translated into English before, I slowly but surely realised that the subject itself is drier than a nun's cunt. There's nothing worse than having to stretch out an essay to 5, 000 words or so when you can some it up with the words 'shit subject, no one cares'.

Haha, imagine if that had been your conclusion.

I felt a bit silly yesterday though measuring the dimensions of the roll with my 15cm Bart Simpson ruler!

Im suprised you were allowed to take photo's. When I went to the Anna Frank museum in Amsterdam, we were'nt allowed to take any photo's to preserve the material there.

Something to do with the flash

To be fair, James is probably the first person to have expressed interest in actually seeing those scrolls. Anne Frank's stuff is slightly more interesting.

You're not allowed to use flash. The parchment is very hard-wearing actually, you don't need to wear gloves and you can move it around quite a lot without much worry - it's actually more modern materials like old newspapers and things that are the fragile stuff.

What's in a camera flash that destroys old relics?
