I always find that I play it for a while, then start to get a bit bored and save, and by the time I come back to play it find I've deleted the save file... I'd like to complete it one day.

You are all wrong the coolest one is Dian Wei, in the apparent history that the games are based on he used two 120 pound spears. 120 fucking pound!

He died being arrowed to death fighting a army pretty much by himself (So Cao Cao could escape) with using a enemy solder as a weapon. Doesn't get much more hardcore then that.
