The programs I use are:

Ripper: ImTOO DVD Ripper
Video Codec: DivX 6
Audio Codec: Fraunhofer Radium MP3

Serials for ImTOO can be found on http://www.astalavista.ms.

ImTOO will need some configuring to use the DivX codec and you'll need to experiment to get the right balance of compression quality and file size. With DivX, I use a bitrate of 990.

You'll need to select "PAL (24fps)" on the input frame rate, and a resolution of 720x567 pixels on the output menu, and also remember to select the AVI format and DivX codec from the dropdown list. Outside of the main configuration windows, you need to select the MPEG2 option from the file type dropdown, and also Infinite for the file size. After all that, you should be ready to go.

I've done all that from memory, so I'll double-check my ImTOO settings when I get home. I tend to get a full movie into around 900Mb depending on the quality settings :)

MPEG4 should be OK I think. If in doubt, rip a chapter of a movie and see what happens :)
