Death Metal: How brutal should it be?
Moderators: James, Craig, Resilience Records
Fuck I saw the Mexican Disgorge in Nottingham a few years ago, I stood at the side of the stage and watched the drummer, he was amazing, almost as jaw-dropping as when I sat behind Gene Hoglan at a SYL show.

A selection of Death Metal bands I listen to regularly:
Nile
Akercocke
Amon Amarth
Death
Deicide
Behemoth
Morbid Angel
Cynic
Cannibal Corpse
At The Gates
Carcass
Atheist
Vital Remains
Mortician
Arch Enemy*
In Flames*
Children of Bodom*
Soilwork*
One Man Army and the Undead Quartet*
Legion of the Damned*
Oh, and... DETHKLOK!
A selection which encompasses most levels of brutality. Anything after Nile becomes nothing but a blur of blastbeats and noise.
*European based bands who always seem to divide people on whether they're death metal or not (eg: Soilwork and In Flames were, but now?)

ideally death metal should be technical and melodic with rasping vocals. Dark and mysterious lyrical themes about reality.

Death metal should be filled with riffs, melodies, and deep vocals.
I prefer the tremolo riff oriented bands though.
I'd say The Chasm is the best death metal band around right now!

It's difficult to know what you mean by "brutal" I like Nile,Cannibal Corpse and co,I'm looking forward to seeing Kataklysm and Aborted twice next week, but are they brutal?
I've got a cd by a band called Bound and Gagged "Fornicate the gutted" and the singer just sounds like he's wrestling with a pig.Unfortunately it just sounds a bit daft.
Yay, Kataklysm!!! Cannae wait to see them next Monday. Of course Kataklysm are brutal. Just listen to that opening riff on "As I Slither".
I don't like the mentally fast stuff. Only DM i can dig is stuff like Obi, Pestilence, Death, newer Napalm Death (Harmony Corruption to present), Nocturnus.

er, you can associate the real extreme stuff/pig squeak vocals with Grindcore... once it goes too insane/crusty then it's generally known as Grind... I'd call Cryptopsy Death Metal. I mean Anaal Nathrakh are a little Death-y but mainly Black Metal I guess.
old skool for me too BTW. Obies, Death... etc.
