I like it that we'd kick the shit out any other intelligent life-form before checking to see if it were friendly or not.

If life forms as a matter of course, who knows what strange things exist out there? From a scientific point of view the idea of totally alien biochemistry is mind-blowing.

On a general point though, I think statistically speaking we would be virtually insane to assume we are the only life in the universe.

I remember a Christian Union bloke at Uni looking really narked when I told him extra-terrestrial life seemed extremely probable to me (it is a favourite Christian rhetoric to stress the "miraculous" string of perfect fine-tunings which have permitted life on Earth), but I just said that with over 100 billion galaxies in the universe, with up to a trillion stars in each, how can he possibly presume that out of the innumerable planets orbiting all of those stars, some sort of life would not have taken hold elsewhere?!

Yes, granted. Also, if we did happen to pick up some intelligent radio signals for example, the creators would probably be long-dead by the time they reached us.
