I only have To Mega Therion and it doesn't move me. I respect that CF are different and highly influential but I prefer a lot of the bands they've influenced - early seps, Napalm Death, Cathedral etc - a lot more.

But have you heard Morbid tales though?? It is more accesible than later stuff, and unless you are into frost, TMT is a bit hard going in places.

What, no "Cold Lake"??
I will vote for "To Mega Therion". It's midway between the rawness of the early days and the experimental avant-garde of "Into the Pandemonium". Surely, this is what it is all about...

The one below is quite amusing though - on some pop show and with a killer performance of "into the Crypts of Rays" (even if it is mimed).

If I remember right, they opened with this at the Hammersmith Palais in '86. Nothing could beat the brutal hammer thrust of the Celtic Frost live experience of '85/'86. There was no one around that sounded the same.
I did an inteview for Tales of the Macabre zine, in the early 90s, with a good mate of mine - Mark Mackay. He stayed with Tom G. at his parent's house in Switzerland in the early days.
He was one of the first guys from the UK to order the old Hellhammer demos and go over to the early Frost gigs in Europe. However, it all fell to pieces when he left the front door open of the house and Tom's dog got out and was lost. They got a call later, from the police, saying that they had it in their pound and Tom had to go and pay cash to get him out.
After that, Tom asked him to pack up and get out of his house and he had to stay at Martin Ain's apartment. He put him in the altar room, which can be seen on the pic disc of the "Tragic Serenades" 12" (yes, this was set up Martin's spare room). The walls were painted black and he had quadraphonic speakers in there. He was woken early in the morning by Martin playing "The Black Mass: An Electric Storm In Hell" by White Noise (a seminal eerie electronic release from 1969). He said it was one of the most bizarre experiences he's ever had waking up in that room to that music. If you have ever heard that piece of music, you'll know why. We used to play it at the end of parties to get people to leave.
Tom never spoke to Mark again till the Hammersmith Odeon gig of 1987, when Reed St Mark brought him on stage, during the soundcheck, to be reconciled. However, it obviously still rankled with him. Tom read that Tales of the Macabre article and brought it up when I had a telephone conversion with him, saying Mark remembered things very differently than he did. When I let on that Mark was one of my best mates and I had conducted the interview, and edited it, he put the phone down on me

Re: Best Celtic Frost release
Yeah, like when he proudly claimed that Frost would not play England until fans had burned down the offices of Metal Forces Magazine (who had mercilessly slagged Hellhammer & Frost).
For years he wouldn't even talk about Hellhammer,or answer any questions on them, as he thought it was part of an embarrasing past, and then starts playing "Messiah" live and then the anthology set of demos comes out with his blessing.

I only have Morbid Tales. I definitley need to pick up some more of their stuff, especially as most of it is about £3 on the old interspazz.

Re: Best Celtic Frost release
as i've grown older i've come to appreciate filth in my music more and more.
Bands like Celtic Frost (and maybe to more extent, Hell Hammer) are one of the main reasons for this filth being spread, and for this they get ultimate respect!
I'd probably go for Morbid Tales for this reason.

without doubt monotheist although if it had into the crypt of rays, procreation of the wicked and circle of the tyrants on it, it would of been an absolute killer album.but they were on other albums so it is only an awesome album.
