Well, I enjoyed that. To be honest, not a great deal of information came out, but I think the reasons why are obvious. It amused me when he said that he couldn't imagine the CofE acting like the Scientologist guy. Maybe he's right, but a god-fearing American would kick his ass. You've seen those red-neck nutters get all aggro AND those crazy-freaks in the Borat movie. However, if you want a recognised figure of the crazy Christians check out Pat Robertson:

Particularly shocking reading are the controversies and criticisms.

Particularly like this one:
"It is interesting, that termites don't build things, and the great builders of our nation almost to a man have been Christians, because Christians have the desire to build something. He is motivated by love of man and God, so he builds. The people who have come into (our) institutions (today) are primarily termites. They are into destroying institutions that have been built by Christians, whether it is universities, governments, our own traditions, that we have.... The termites are in charge now, and that is not the way it ought to be, and the time has arrived for a godly fumigation."--Pat Robertson, New York Magazine, August 18, 1986
"And what about the churches and all their wealth
There's an unseen fortune under their belts
Are golden temples a symbol of God's way
This horde of wealth is a sickening display"

That was madness indeed. I began to think it was a bit ridiculous at the start when they were talking about Scientology and there were all these evil undertones in the background, like the sinister music and what-not, making it seem like some sort of horror movie. I thought they were going to just give a completely subjective biased view about how Scientology is evil blah blah blah. But it actually turned out to be pretty good! It was definitely quite scary how that idiot man-cunt Tommy kept turning up everywhere and being a cunt (but quite funny when they showed the mini-montage of the other man showing up everywhere - Sweeney's expressions were great), but Mr Sweeney was pretty cool about it all, doing his best to remain calm and unprovocative (despite his humorous and well-timed mentions of the word 'cult'). His patience really must be rewarded, I'd never have been able to keep that calm in the face of that twat. He did lose it at one point, unsurprisingly, but basically well done indeed. In the end it didn't really give any answers, which I liked, because when an organisation/cult/gay/whatever is so secret and strange about everything, it's impossible to give any answers backed up by factual evidence. But it showed how crazy they are and how badly they want to stop anyone from investigating it. It was ridiculous!
But basically, I think the best thing a documentary like this can do is raise questions rather than give answers - that way it encourages people to think for themselves. It was still quite obviously in favour of a certain point of view, but it didn't quite try and brainwash you into hating and fearing Scientology - it just gave you examples of how crazy some of the people are, and by showing interviews with ex-Scientologists, it did supply a good bit of evidence to back this up.

I've just thought of something amusing - you know how the world is not meant to know about xenu, the aliens and everything? Well imagine if Hubbard invented all that for a joke, so that when the Scientology initiates finally reach the OT level where they find out all this shit, they feel totally ridiculous and gutted!
It's obviously not the case, but it would be fucking hilarious.
"Awesome, I have payed myself into the upper echelons of secret knowledge! Now to find out Hubbard's great truth once and for all...
WHAT THE FUCK? Xenu? Thetans? Volcanoes? You asshole Hubbard! You aaaaaaaasshooooole!"

Announcement:
Tomorrow I plan to go into the Scientology shop on Tottenham Court Road!
I may or may not wear my Inquisition shirt which reads "Enter the Cult".
If you do not hear from me within a week - contact the authorities!
(IMPORTANT: in the event of my disappearance, I firmly request that no 'Find Madelaine' style ritual takes place. I would not want my martyrdom to be discredited by the creation of another cult, and especially not a grief cult!)

It'd be interesting to meet or see some British Scientologists compared to American ones. I can't see them being as stalker-ish... but I could be wrong.

I agree, I think the British just aren't sufficiently confrontational. However, I have been on an e-meter...
I stop and talk to people who leaflet or work for charities and the like. One time I was going through Brum city centre when at University and this womn stopped me. I thought she was another charity worker type when she asks me whether I have time for an interview. I said 'yes' because I did and she told me to follow her. I did think it strange but I did follow because I didn't know what to expect. Anyway, on the way to this building there is a bit of small talk, what I study and is it stressful, that sort of thing. Inside the building we go and into the lift, at which point she asks me if I've heard of Scientology. I tried not to pull a face and said I had. When the doors open, she calls this woman over who then takes over. There are poster-boards all over the place, pictures of volcanoes and space and the like. Anyway, so she sits me down and explains the e-meter. I am now holding this thing and she gets my 'basic reading'. Next thing she asks me to think about something bad that had happened to me. So I did and she says 'ooh, you've hit something there, tell me about it'. Being the frank person I am and thinking I won't see this lady again I vent out my problems. She then asked me to think of a recent issue that was giving me stress. It just so happened that I was going through a really tough point andso I was feeling really low. Once again she asked me to elaborate.
After all this depressing chat I felt really upset and a little vulnerable at which point she hits me with: 'you know, Scientology can help you out with these feelings.' She explains dianectics and says to me that they do courses to make me feel better. It starts at £26 but a week is what I really need. The manipulation of my feelings was so obvious and shocking I immediately felt a bit better, I made m excuses and then left. That is how they work, they leech off your negative feelings. Bastards.

Anyone seen the big train sketch where simon pegg goes in to take this personality test and then goes down to a cellar where a evil overlord tries to inject him with stuff? When he runs off, the overload shoots a lightning bolt from his staff and he vaporises.
"I guess he's not the one..."
This is why I shall never go into strange premises where I will have to take tests...

Good lord, check out this response to the Panorama programme:
http://www.bbcpanorama-exposed.org/
I even downloaded and watched the 25 minute "counter-documentary", because I actually feel so disgusted that this plague exists on our streets.
I can only say after watching it - HOW STUPID DO THEY THINK I AM? It is the most transparent piece of thrown together propagandising imaginable. I'm disgusted that British people are a part of this.
One of the most ridiculous things about the above video is that they have clearly raided archives of various past interviews with reputable, informed people, and extracted snippets of each irrelevant interview so that it looks as though they are being interviewed especially by the film-makers on the topic of John Sweeney's behaviour.
I was particularly amused when they happily manipulated the words of a Psychiatrist - a purveyor of a trade which Scientologists openly blame for the horrors of the Holocaust!
I'm proud of the fact that the UK has not yet recognized Scientology as a religion, but it wouldn't surprise me if today's fucking liberal climate saw it done. If that happened, I would feel totally betrayed.
It also turns out that the UK Scientologists have been trying to win over London's City police, inviting them to free events, film premieres and so on. The chief of the force actually made a speech at the opening of Scientology's new London HQ, praising it as "a force for good" and an illustration of our tolerant society. Fucking cunt.
