Mascherano was stupid, no question, but Bennett couldn't wait to get his red card out. He'd booked Mascher for his first tackle of the game and wouldn't explain his actions when Mascher asked him. From then on, every time he made a challenge, Bennett was on his back, giving United free kicks every single time. Not surprisingly, he got more than a bit wound up.
If Bennett had shown half a brain cell's worth of sense he would have taken Mascherano to one side after the first challenge and had a friendly word in his ear why he was being booked (exactly like Clattenburg did to three Chelsea players later that afternoon) but seeing as he'd been bollocked the day before by Keith Hackett for not intervening with Ashley Cole's tackle, he got in a strop and was determined to send somebody off. Mascherano was just stupid enough to not read the warning signs.

Only at Old Trafford can you get fouled then get a yellow card for being fouled and then have a player sent off for asking why.


Oh, and about the game itself - we wouldn't have won with Mascherano on the pitch anyway. United were far better than us before he got sent off. The most we may have got was a scrappy equaliser but the way we were playing, that would have been undeserved. Reina had a nightmare, Skrtel looked terrified and Gerrard only occasionally looked threatening.
