This whole LHC stuff is actually pretty rediculous. All this media hype and effectively all they do is flick a power switch. A colleague's daugher was crying last night thinking we may not wake up this morning. The media have hyped this up so far it's bordering on hysteria.

From what I can tell from the BBC News article, today was effectively just sending one beam one way around the ring. Zero (or as near as makes no difference to zero) risk. The media has conveniently ignored the fact that the actual experiments don't start for another month at least, and at least six months until the machine's running at full power.

In all seriousness though, I think it is bloody great that humans have teamed up to work on a project like this, and put the time and resources into it just for the sake of knowing - it makes you feel we are a pretty amazing species after all, and I would gladly see tax money go on more things like this.

We've not had a decent apocalypse scare for ages. I grew up in fear of nuclear war in the 80s, and the Y2K bug was pretty scary too. Trying not to think about December 2012...

Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

Thank the Police coming straight from the underground...

Black holes will happen, we wont all die, this was only a test, propper experiment possibly in December, many people in court for touching boobs thinking it was the end of the world.

It's an experiment to recreate certain conditions just after the Big Bang, aiming to gain knowledge about antimatter and certain theorised particles that have not been observed before.

This is done by colliding two particles inside a massive tube at just under the speed of light.

Some idiots have claimed it could potentially destroy the world by creating tiny black holes, and other crack pot theories.

And that's been stretched out to five pages? That's borderline soul-destroying.
