Maybe it refers to a whip, which used to be made of animal hide? Or hitting someone with a leather belt?

Another idiom that really pisses me off is "I apology unreservedly" - so normally when you apologise you hold back little small-print clauses within your apology?! So annoying and fake sounding.

Dan thinks he's alright....

He used really cliche insults though.

Freak
Queer
Get a life
I'm gonna fucking put you in hospital.

With worse spelling of course.

'Freak' and 'queer' are both excellent put-downs. 'Wee poof' is better of course, but still. As for 'get a life', I tend to use 'sort your life out'. It's a funny one to use when someone says something relatively unimportant that you disagree with.
