Ah - now you're in my territory. Being an old twat I saw most punk bands play back in the old days (apart from the Pistols, who cancelled their gig). Anyway ....

Damned
UK Subs
Discharge (highly influential)
Crass (brutally simple, but very effective)
GBH
Anti-Pasti
The Clash (esp. early stuff)
Sex Pistols (Bollocks is still a classic rock album)
Stiff Little Fingers (woefully under-rated)
Buzzcocks
The Ruts (shame their lead singer (Malcolm Owen) died - they could have been huge)
Dead Kennedys (first band I ever saw who encouraged stagediving)
Black Flag
DRI
The Ramones
The Exploited
Zounds (first album is anarcho-punk weirdness)
Sham 69 (good drinking music)
The Adverts

I never really got into Oi - too many skinheads and fights at gigs. Some of the Oi bands (4 Skins, Cockney Rejects, Blitz) had a few decent tracks though.

There are probably more I've forgotten but that's enough to start you off.

ooooh I forgot about Aus-Rotten, check em out if you like it raw and heavy! more modern than most of the other stuff being mentioned but good shit nonetheless!

Deviated Instinct are a weird one from the 80s, a bit different to most stuff i've heard, a little bit more metal, vocals are pretty sick

Can I also mention Rudimentary Peni. They're really dark with really clever lyrics. Lots of pun-like stuff. Sort of like a more obscure Martin Walkyier if he was actually mental. 'Rotten to the Core' (as in Jonny Rotten. as in hardcore?). Poppy Cock (poppies are the opium of the people! Genius). Vampire State Building. Slimy Member (as in MP). Death Church is probably the best Anarchopunk album.

Also, Reagan Youth are playing London soon. Awesome...
"And what about the churches and all their wealth
There's an unseen fortune under their belts
Are golden temples a symbol of God's way
This horde of wealth is a sickening display"

You're right there. Nick Blinko (their lead singer) has been in psychiatric hospitals on occasion.

Also, speaking of madmen I forgot the quite brilliant and amazing Killing Joke - still going strong and as good as ever (although Paul Raven (drums)), recently died). Again, a hugely influential band, having been covered by Metallica amongst others (plus, Nirvana admitted nicking the "Eighties" bassline for "Come As You Are"). They moved to Iceland once, convinced that the apocalypse was coming. Jaz Coleman (their lead singer) apparently tried to set up his own army there. Mad as snakes, the lot of them.

And if we can branch out slightly from punk, check out New Model Army. Amazing bass work and damn good songs to boot. Again, still going strong.

I'm a big Killing Joke fan was great to catch them at Hellfest, its cool how they sort of go between punk, metal, industrial, pop and dance!

Indeed Jaz is one of those people who are very smart but totally crazy...the spoken word album how he thinks that certain cords in relation to numerology keep demons at bay and that Lovecraft wasn't writing fiction but a conduit for all the space beings visiting him in his dreams....indeed

Also the whole Nirvana and eighties thing is funny because The Damned had more or less the same guitar line for their song Life Goes On, which came out before eighties.

No definately not - great record with great songs is Nevermind...
The good/bad thing about Sex Pistols is that there are reprinted tshirts sold in Topshop - bit too commercial, like the ramones shirts

A good game is to go up to someone with a ramones tshirt on and ask them what their favourite ramones album is?
You could either have an interesting conversation - or see them squirm like an idiot!

Same for misfits/iron maiden..et others
