Well, both bands formed in 96, and released debuts in 97, so cant say either was copying the other really. However, the debut WT album, is miles superior to anything NW has done in my opinion. The vocals of Sharon Den Adel on that first WT album are perfect, not the OTT operatic style NW use, but powerful, expressive and smooth, and they compliment the death metal vocals on there completely.
Maybe both bands were copying Lacuna Coil who were foemed in 94 (although under another name).

Yes, they formed around the same time but Nightwish came to people's attention first so rightly or wrongly, most people just thought the likes of WT, LC and others like Epica and Edenbridge were just copying Nightwish even though they'd been doing their respective things for a while.

I like female fronted band for the most part. I've seen Nightwish four times, met them once and seen all the other bands I mentioned - apart from Lacuna Coil. Because they're shit.

I quite like some lacuna coil, and the first mini cd they released was brilliant!!! The best female fronted band however, is norways Paradigma, who actually had 3 vocalists, a soprano female, a tenor male, and a death metal male vocalist. They had wicked wah-wah guitar solos and were stoned all the time. What a fucking great band!!!! :D

I think that instead of trying to copy each other, they should both try to copy "shutting the fuck up".

It just means they either downloaded some strings things off the net or paid some people to play violins over their music. Its not a 'symphonic' use of strings, its a 'pop' use of strings, like in take that songs or whatever. Manowar, Emperor (and Rhapsody  ) use strings, but generally in a slightly less cynical pop fashion.

It hardly sounds like "bubble gum" pop but suppose it is pop considering they've had quite a few number ones. I dont think Nightiwsh are Symphonic because they use strings either, like you said just using strings doesn't make it Symphonic it's what its like as a whole.

Yeah fair enough, its definitely not bubble gum pop, but its pretty close to something like celine dion ballads or whatever at times. Maybe i havent listened to enough of their music, and frankly im not likely to, but from what i have heard i couldnt describe it as a symphony, but i guess the meaning of symphony has probably changed somewhat in recent years.

Nightwish on the whole are 'metal'. And they've always used keyboards and all sorts, but just recently they've been getting into using real orchestras, and I think that's taken over them a bit and they've turned into a horrible band of pop rubbish, although they used to be quite nice and epic. But this new single isn't representative of what they usually sound like. However, if its representative of what they sound like now, with this new singer, that's a mighty shame. It was bound to happen I suppose. It seems to be a general pattern with most bands that as they increase in mainstream popularity, they get shitter and shitter. Megadeth and Metallica are of course examples that we can all relate to.

Oh dear... They've released a few new samples on their site, and they sound really quite shit. I think it's largely down to the new singer. She sounds too much like a pop singer. As a result, the music sounds a lot more horrible, even though its not too different from Once (but a bit shitter). Oh well, nevermind, there goes another band down the drain.
