Some of the overrated albums in my personal opinion.

Slayer - Reign in Blood - Never understood how it is usually regarded as their best. Hell Awaits was far better as it was crunchier more interesting riffs and RIB seems a little to fast for its own good at times.

Megadeth- Rust in Peace - A bit dull apart from a couple songs or so. Mustaine's vocals are hard to get into and they had a much more melodic sound than a lot of other thrash albums.

Metallica - Master of Puppets - Mostly a snoozefest to me. Not very thrashy except for a few moments but that is besides the point. Musically speaking there are far better albums out there from other bands.

Sodom - Agent Orange - The title track is great and the punk songs towards the end of the album are relatively entertaining but the other songs have nothing memorable about them, being a bit monotone.

Good post, I largely agree.

To what extent would people agree that Reign in Blood was effectively a more refined, distilled Hell Awaits? There is very little progression, and listening to Hell Awaits is basically like listening to a blueprint for Reign in Blood, but with a more sinister edge.

The Reign in Blood production tramples the over-loud drums and somewhat empty guitar tone of Hell Awaits in my view, but musically it was nothing radically different. I tend to think of Reign in Blood as the more enjoyable album, but in terms of progression, it was hardly a revolutionary album.

Show No Mercy on the other hand remains the most exciting Slayer album to me - Araya's vocals were less monotonous, and I love the fusion of NWOBHM riffing.

As for Master of Puppets, I agree with you there. Enough said really.

Agent Orange, again, I agree. nice title track, technically good thrash from there on in, but none of their earlier attitude.

I've never really understood this viewpoint that seems to abound amongst some people, and is surely only really down to MoP being a more diverse album (and by that dint more interesting than a lot of B-grade thrash albums that people praise around here and that basically rewrite the same song 10 times).

There's PLENTY of thrashing moments on the album, Battery, Damage Inc. Disposable Heroes and large sections of the title track are totally thrashing, and if the album wasn't all that thrashy it was probably to it's advantage.

(I'm not really making a point against the person quoted, because he did say that it's lack of thrashiness was besides the point.)

I don't really think of it as a thrash album in the sense.. To me it's a fucking decent metal album, with some GOOD thrash songs!!! Sure, in some places it can get a bit tedious, but TBH how many perfect albums are there?

Overrated / Underrated Thrash

Postby eTyke on Thu Jun 29, 2006 3:23 pm

OVERRATED:

SLAYER - EVERYTHING except Seasons..
METALLICA i mean lets face it since Justice.. it's all been shit
PANTERA (not really thrash i know) but in my opinion MASSIVELY OVERRATED! Yeah Dime could play but way way too much Judas Priest going on in their albums

UNDERRATED:

Well somebody listed KREATOR as overrated earlier, i really don't think Kreator have had much coverage to say that about them, Enemy of God is a class album, i know they aint awesome but not overrated, same i think can be said for OVERKILL although Bobby pisses me off a little....E ! limination!
TESTAMENT went real gay about 1992 but that's coz Skolnik wrote that album, anyone unfamiliar with them should check out LOW, THE GATHERING and THE LEGACY albums.
Oh and is it just me or should Onslaught really really not have bothered to reform cos they were weak as piss back in the day?

Anyone remember UK thrash band PENDEMIA now they should reform.

I agree with your call on Slayer, Seasons is the only album that I find myself listening to these days. Pantera are horrendously over-rated and, basically, just fucking piss poor. I did listen to Cowboys From Hell recently and quite enjoyed it. It's the sort of album I can stick on when I come out of the shower to get ready for a drink session or something.

And as for Metallica, I think they've sucked since Ride the Lightning and have never understood why people rate ... AJFA, it's so repetitive! I have been trying to get into Metallica's first two efforts again recently though. If only they'd had someone other than James sing and Lars on drums on Ride the Lightning. I also don't care much for hippies in Thrash...

Never liked Testament, find them rather boring personally, as for Pendemia Narcotic Religion is a decent album but wouldnt say they where the best from the UK Thrash scene, ignoring the "more known" uk bands, Moral Crusade (Although I think they where from Ireland), Anihilated, Arbitrater, Xyster are some of my favorites.

WTF  Testament are great! Not over-rated at all!!!

Just appreciate the music that the bands wrote, there's no point saying Slayer are shit; they BLATANLY aren't, same with early 'tallica (although RTL has never done it for me). It's all good! Well, mostly...

Testament are good to an extent but I think they are well over-rated aswell. Testament are one of the few Bay Area bands whose albums are not difficult to find in vast supply in HMV and the like which is a shame because I think bands like Vio-lence and Laaz Rockit shit all over Testament and deserve to have their albums pedalled.

Highly amusing!

I haven't checked out Eternal Nightmare, but I have to admit Vio-lence's 'Oppressing the Masses' does very little for me. :(
