But look at America: it's something like 80% of American adults that believe in God as a genuine entity. The majority of their schools are now teaching "intelligent design" as an alternative to science! That's not harmless. These people are trying to undo scientific progress and succeeding. They want their "magic man" answer taught alongside Now "intelligent design" is in our schools too. This isn't just a family of extremists like the Phelps, this is a worldwide correlation of thought between christians and other religious types. It's not all of them, but it's enough to present a serious threat. This is why we need people like Dawkins.

Yes, I've seen that episode of Penn and Teller's Bullshit as well.

Intelligent design was taught in my secondary school, in RE. It again comes down to choice, a very good friend of mine is Christian but he doesn't believe in so called "Intelligent Design". Why? because he isn't a moron and can see the evidence supporting evolution.

Just because something is being taught doesn't mean people are going to choose it. And as for the idea that there is some sort of global organization trying to debunk evolution as a whole, they are laughable at best.

I think if you took a national survey in America as to what they believe the majority of those that actually believe in "intelligent design" (i hate using that term) would be limited to what is knows as middle America, aka white Christian central.

Anyway i am rambling, to get back to my point. Just because something is being taught doesn't mean people will believe it. If these groups were going around attacking museums and smashing fossils i might be more inclined to agree with you. But all i see is a load of... hicks for the lack of a better word ranting and raging that the bible is being ignored.

Hostile wrote:I'd say all things are possible with explanation. God denies explanation. "Faith" has no place in science.

So only thing things that we can explain are possible? Well we had better watch 99.9999% of the universe vanish, because i think that 0.00001% of things that make up all human knowledge is a fair estimate. Somethings are just beyond us, now i am in no way saying this means there is a god. Just that is would take much longer that the lifetime of our species to even get to 1%.

Hostile wrote:I didn't mean to really accuse you of agnosticism, I'm just expressing distaste for the concept. I don't see the need to flip-flop on something like this. No-one pisses me off more than the "I believe there might be SOMETHING out there" crew.

No offense taken, i think we should leave it here though as i can see this degrading into a mud slinging fight.
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

Man, I hate those guys. Yeah I'm happy to stop the conversation here. Honestly I'm far too empassioned about this subject to discuss it rationally.

Sorry, I have been away on holiday but I find the religion thing interesting. I don't want to pull back people into bitter arguments but just some things to mention:

- If the universe is an endless, infinite space and God made and controls it (as religions will have us believe) then God must exist within that universe. Only if the Universe has an end can we accept that God exists because it would be beyond the Universe that we ould find this supreme creator.

- On the topic of universe and space, surely the Christian concept of God must get fucked up by aliens. I mean, in an enormous, near-infinite universe it must be acceptable to believe that aliens exist. Just as acceptable to believe that some aliens are, in some ways, superior beings. Therefore, if we ever discover or are dicovered by an intelligent lifeform they would never accept a Christian God that said that we were made in his image. I personally would consider that an offence to extra terrestials.

- There is nowt wrong with faith or belief per se. The problem is rigid dogma and the prejudice it brings. It is undeniable that religions have been the cause for a lo of the world's woes. Far more than it has healed in my opinion. A belief is perfectly acceptable, believe in a loving creator. To go beyond this and institutionalise it, causes problems. I believe in religious tolerance. I will tolerate religious people but they have o share the tolerance. Otherwise, they're just another sect of cunts.

Anyway, enough of my jibber jabber. Another love is PEEP SHOW. SERIES 4, here I come.
"And what about the churches and all their wealth
There's an unseen fortune under their belts
Are golden temples a symbol of God's way
This horde of wealth is a sickening display"

Does anyone else think it's weird that humans even exist? Why are we the only (supposed) intelligent life-form in our solar system? It's massive, there should be loads. Why Earth? Very strange.

Because it takes an immensely specific set of parameters to foster any type of life, and we occupy the only planet in the visible region with such a capacity. That's my theory anyway. I'm sure other solar systems will have their one planet which is positioned perfectly for the same function.

Following on from STD's point... if the universe isn't endless, couldn't there be more than one universe in which a God exists and controls ours? The possibilities are endless. It's all very well arguing these different points, but none of us make the rules.

yeah..and we're never going to know anyway! I waste so much time contemplating and discussing these things :wall:

It's bloody interesting though. However it was created the universe is a fucking masterpiece. Hopefully they'll find out alot more about other solar systems and planets in my lifetime.

It's worrying I can never think of many interests besides music. Well, I've been playing cello for about 8 years. Don't play like the guys in apocalyptica though. Half of my time is eaten by 6th form at the moment, but only got a few months left of that thankfully, and if my exams go ok and I stop procrastinating then I should be at uni in london studying chemistry come september.
